Pokemon Scarlet and Violet’s New Tera Raid Event is History Repeating Itself

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's New Tera Raid Event is History Repeating Itself

Highlights

  • Shiny Gimmighoul is tied to time-limited Tera Raids with 1 in 4096 odds, making it tough to obtain.
  • Gimmighoul’s shiny form is almost identical to the original, and players must catch all critters in raids to make sure they’re not fleeing a shiny Gimmighoul.
  • The event’s unrewarding nature may signal the need for better events in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet’s future.

As a dedicated Pokemon trainer with countless hours spent catching ’em all, I find myself rather disheartened by the latest event in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet – the Gimmighoul Tera Raid for the 2024 World Championships. Now, I’ve been through my fair share of raids, from the humble beginnings of catching a single Pokemon to the colossal Dynamax Raids, but this event feels like a step back rather than forward.

As we inch closer to the two-year mark since the release of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, The Pokemon Company has admirably maintained their support for Generation 9 games through additional content post-launch and regular smaller updates. The gaming model for Pokemon is increasingly aligning with live-service titles, as there are frequent limited-time events, bonus items, and monsters up for grabs via gift codes or defeating the 7-star Tera Raid bosses in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. These Tera Raids provide a platform to encounter rare creatures such as exclusive Paradox Pokemon or even the returning shiny Gimmighoul event for the 2024 World Championships. However, this particular event falls short of greatness.

In the sequence of events following the introduction of Dynamax and Gigantamax Raids in Pokemon Sword and Shield, it’s reasonable to expect that some form of raid will continue in Generation 9 as well. Early on in Generation 9, The Pokemon Company offered players an opportunity to capture a rare shiny Gimmighoul through a Tera Raid event, which generated much excitement due to the fact that Gimmighoul was locked from being shiny in the base game. Unfortunately, both the initial shiny Gimmighoul event in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet and the current one for the 2024 World Championships share a disappointing similarity.

Why Pokemon Scarlet and Violet Dropped The Ball With Their Worlds 2024 Gimmighoul Event

Shiny Gimmighoul is Once Again Locked Behind a Time-Limited Event With Bad Odds

The Gimmighoul event commences on August 9, 2024, and continues until August 22. During this period, several events for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet will take place concurrently, including mass outbreaks that boost the chances of finding shinies among Wattrel, Riolu, and Comfey. Unlike these mass outbreaks, the Gimmighoul event is linked exclusively to Tera Raids, specifically 5-star Raids. Regrettably, the chance of encountering a shiny Gimmighoul in this event remains the same as usual – approximately 1 in 4096. Given that this is the second occurrence of the event and it’s the only way to secure this particular Pokemon as a shiny, this can be somewhat disheartening.

During Gimmighoul’s Tera Raid event, the Pokemon appears as a boss in one-star, two-star, three-star, four-star, and five-star raids. However, its shimmering variant (shiny form) can be encountered as a rare possibility exclusively in five-star raids.

Since Pokémon Scarlet and Violet may see reduced support during 2025 and early 2026 (potentially around the release of Gen 10), it would be logical to enhance fans’ chances of catching a shiny Gimmighoul for the 2024 World Championships. This event could be particularly frustrating and labor-intensive as Gimmighoul’s shiny version is almost indistinguishable from its original form, especially in Tera Raid battles.

Why Pokemon Scarlet and Violet’s Gimmighoul Tera Raid Event is Unrewarding

A more enjoyable approach for celebrating the game’s progress in competitiveness over the years might have been to increase the chances of finding a shiny Gholdengo, especially since it’s a popular choice in Gen 9 double battles. However, players are instead given an event that lasts only two weeks and doesn’t ensure the appearance of a shiny Gimmighoul. Additionally, requiring players to catch every Pokemon in the raids of Scarlet and Violet to prevent them from running away from a potential shiny can be quite daunting when considering storage space.

In Tera Raids, regardless if they are common or special Pokémon, neither the Shiny Charm nor Sandwiches will increase their chances of being shiny.

As a gamer, managing my limited storage space in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet can be quite a challenge when I catch hordes of Gimmighoul after short raids. It feels more like a chore than fun, especially since there doesn’t seem to be an enticing shiny Gimmighoul event yet. However, it seems the game might be trying to teach us a lesson here, but for now, we’re left with either dealing with it or passing on this event altogether. Neither option is ideal, and it’s concerning that this isn’t the first time an event like this has been implemented without giving players adequate rewards for their time invested.
