In the world of Pokémon, obedience has been a core gameplay feature since its debut, but it’s evolved over time, particularly since Generation 1. Typically, a Pokémon will follow the commands of its novice trainers up until level 20. To boost their obedience from levels 20 to 25 or 30, trainers previously needed to collect gym badges. In the latest installments, Pokémon Scarlet & Violet, the obedience system operates similarly, with over-leveled Pokémon occasionally disobeying commands. However, there’s a significant change in Scarlet/Violet that sets it apart from its predecessors: the introduction of an alternative method to increase obedience levels without requiring gym badges.
Disobedience in Pokemon Scarlet & Violet
How Obedience Works in Gen 9
Unlike a sword or shield, a Pokemon’s willingness to follow commands is primarily influenced by the level at which it was initially caught. If you are embarking on your adventure, remember that any Pokemon caught at a level of 20 or lower will respond positively to your instructions. This means that if a Pokemon is caught above level 20, it may not follow your commands until you earn your first gym badge. However, if you catch a Pokemon within the obedience range, it will continue to listen to you even as its level surpasses the initial limit.
As a devoted fan, imagine finding yourself with no badges and managing to capture a level 20 Fletchinder. Utilizing this fiery Pokémon in battles or auto-battles will cause its level to rise to 21. Remarkably, even at level 21, the Fletchinder continues to heed my commands. However, should you capture a level 21 Fletchinder without any badges, it won’t respond to your instructions until you’ve earned that coveted first badge.
Attempting to force an uncooperative Pokémon into auto-battle results in it ignoring commands, with a blue speech bubble appearing above its icon in the lower-left screen corner. During combat, your Pokémon might refrain from using moves when prompted, and could either fall asleep or injure itself due to confusion.
Obedience Level and Badge Requirements in Scarlet & Violet
Understanding Gym Badges
You can check the level that your Pokemon will obey you by viewing your Trainer Card:
- Open the map with Y-button.
- Press X-button to select the Profile option.
To capture more powerful Pokémon and gain their trust, you should embark on the quest through Victory Road. This journey requires gathering all eight gym badges within Paldea, followed by challenging the Pokémon League. Every time you acquire a new badge, the obedience level of your Pokémon increases by five levels.
In the open-world game of Scarlet/Violet, you have the liberty to challenge the Gym Leaders in whichever sequence you prefer, with the exception being that some might be suggested as a good starting point for beginners. If you’re just getting started, consider tackling the Cortondo Gym or the Artazon Gym first.
Below iare the badge obedience levels:
Badge No. | Obedience Level |
---|---|
1 | Pokemon caught at level 25 or lower will obey your commands. |
2 | Pokemon caught at level 30 or lower will obey your commands. |
3 | Pokemon caught at level 35 or lower will obey your commands. |
4 | Pokemon caught at level 40 or lower will obey your commands. |
5 | Pokemon caught at level 45 or lower will obey your commands. |
6 | Pokemon caught at level 50 or lower will obey your commands. |
7 | Pokemon caught at level 55 or lower will obey your commands. |
8 | All Pokemon will obey your commands regardless of their level. |
The level of obedience is based on the number of badges you collect, rather than who the Gym Leader is. For instance, if you defeat Brassius first, your Pokemon’s obedience level will increase to 25. Afterward, battling Katy will boost it up to 30.
Will Transferred or Traded Pokemon Still Obey?
Does OT Matter?
In earlier versions of Pokemon games like Scarlet and Violet, each Pokemon had an identifier called Original Trainer or OT. This ID was significant as it could influence a Pokemon’s responsiveness to its trainer. If you received a Pokemon through trading (meaning it had a different OT or ID) and leveled it beyond its obedience level, then it might stop responding to your commands.
In the games Scarlet and Violet, the Original Trainer doesn’t influence a Pokémon’s obedience. When you are moving or trading Pokémon to your save file, the level at which they are moved or traded is considered their “encounter level.
As a dedicated Pokémon trainer, I’ve come across an interesting fact: if a Pokémon is traded to me when it’s level 17 or below and I train it past level 20, it will continue to follow my commands faithfully. However, if I receive a Pokémon that’s already level 21, it seems to have a mind of its own and may not always listen to my instructions.
