A dedicated Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG) collector is on a quest to gather every version of a single card, and they’ve already amassed over 1,700 copies! The TCG has been a huge success for the Pokémon franchise since its launch nearly 30 years ago. Since the first Base Set expansion, The Pokémon Company has released 125 different sets in English, with the latest being “Phantasmal Flames.” Now, this fan is determined to collect every possible variation of a vintage Pokémon card.
Released in Japan in 1997 and internationally in 1999, the Fossil expansion is a beloved set in the history of the Pokemon Trading Card Game. It introduced the fossil Pokemon from the original Pokemon Red and Blue games – Kabuto, Omanyte, and Aerodactyl – as cards. The set also included the legendary bird Pokemon of the Kanto region – Articuno, Moltres, and Zapdos – which are still highly collectible today. Fossil even gave us a now-classic Trainer card, Energy Search, which remains popular with players. Recently, one particular fossil Pokemon has captured the attention of a dedicated fan.
A Pokemon Fan is Trying to Collect Every 1st Edition Kabuto Card
A Pokemon Trading Card Game enthusiast known as Kabuto King is on a quest to collect every possible version of a specific Pokemon card: Kabuto from the Fossil expansion. They frequently share their progress online, focusing on obtaining every 1st Edition Kabuto card ever printed. Kabuto King has already collected over 1,700 copies of the card, and even has several professionally graded versions, demonstrating their dedication to owning every single copy of this classic Pokemon.
A dedicated collector’s efforts raise doubts about how realistic it is to find every Kabuto card. Although exact print numbers aren’t public, it’s estimated that around 60,000 boxes of the Pokemon Fossil expansion were made in each production run. Considering the frequent reprinting of this Pokemon TCG set early on, hundreds of thousands of boxes were likely printed overall. Because Kabuto was a common card in the set, many boxes probably contained multiple Kabuto cards, potentially resulting in a total number of cards in the hundreds of thousands, or even millions.
Fossil Kabuto’s Value is Rising with Kabuto Fan’s Collection
Although Kabuto King hasn’t yet achieved his goal of collecting every 1st Edition Kabuto card, the popular Pokemon fan’s influence is now affecting the card’s price. Over the past few weeks, prices for 1st Edition Fossil Kabuto cards on TCGPlayer have significantly increased, with the cheapest available now costing over $20. This is a dramatic difference compared to the Unlimited edition of the card, which currently sells for under 50 cents.
The huge popularity of Pokemon often inspires dedicated fans to create unique collections. One fan recently shared a special card – a Popplio card from the Sun & Moon series – that was signed by Pope Leo. Many fans also collect the most valuable Pokemon cards, like the original Charizard and Pikachu with the Grey Felt Hat, which can sell for thousands of dollars. As Pokemon and the Pokemon Trading Card Game continue to thrive, fans will undoubtedly find even more creative ways to collect.
