A dedicated Pokémon Trading Card Game collector lost their entire collection when a sewer pipe broke, causing thousands of dollars in damage. The story quickly spread online, and the Pokémon TCG community came up with several inventive ways to help them recover some of their losses.
So, I’ve been a Pokémon card collector for a long time, and recently I really got back into it – starting around 2019. I’ve built up a pretty big collection, and this story comes from my own experience with it all. I saw a post by another collector, Substantial-Pie-4973, who’s also been into the TCG for ages, and this is what happened to them.
Pokemon TCG Cards Worth Thousands of Dollars Destroyed by Sewage Line Burst
In late October 2025, a Pokemon card collector shared a devastating story on the r/PokemonTCG subreddit. Their basement storage room suffered a sewage line burst, and unfortunately, the resulting flood destroyed most of their card collection. The collector explained that binders and sealed booster packs were submerged in contaminated water for several days before the issue was discovered. Because the room was sealed off, no one inside the house noticed any flooding or smelled the sewage.
The items were completely ruined by water damage, classified as “Category 3” – the most dangerous type, often linked to sewage or other hazardous waste. The owner, known as Substantial-Pie-4973, explained the cards were normally kept safe but had been moved to the basement temporarily while they helped their father start a new business and searched for a smaller house. They had left a good job to support their dad, feeling he’d always been there for them, and didn’t want to see him fail. They only expected to be living in their grandmother’s basement for a couple of months.
Pokemon TCG Community Offers ‘Poop Pack’ Opening Suggestions, Scalping Accusations
After the story broke, some people online asked the original poster to livestream themselves opening the damaged booster packs – which were referred to as “poop packs” because of the contamination shown in the pictures. One popular comment suggested people might donate to watch, even though the poster had already said most of the cards were thrown away due to the contamination. While most people were sympathetic, a few accused the poster of trying to resell Pokémon cards for profit.
One person commented they have no sympathy for those hoarding unopened trading card packs, particularly newer ones. This was in response to images showing packs from the January 2023 Pokemon TCG expansion, Crown Zenith—not old collections. While not directly addressing claims of price gouging, user Substantial-Pie-4973 stated they were holding onto a few packs for gifts and “rainy days” but didn’t offer any further explanation.
