Fans of the Pokemon Trading Card Game played a crucial role in assisting police to apprehend a suspect who was accused of stealing cards that carried an astonishingly high monetary value. The market for these cards is lively, with individual cards often selling for hundreds or even thousands of dollars.
It’s regrettably frequent to hear tales about individuals attempting to make money by stealing Pokemon cards. For instance, in December 2024, thieves swiped over $315,000 worth of Pokemon cards from Ace Grading, a company similar to PSA that grades trading cards. Earlier in July, a Pokemon card shop in Japan experienced a significant loss when their manager, from a nearby store, walked away with 123 items valued at approximately $94,000. However, this time the story about stolen Pokemon TCG cards had a positive outcome.
It was reported by MassLive that a 24-year-old man suspected of stealing over $115,000 worth of Pokemon Trading Card Game (TCG) cards on July 8 was apprehended this week by the police in New Bedford, Massachusetts. The individual was trying to resell a Green Wings Booster Box from the Base Set Unlimited, one of the items stolen from the 1st Edition Collectibles store, at Collectible Tags, as per the website’s account. On the same day, he also attempted to sell another item at Dream Collectors. With the Pokemon TCG community on alert following the theft, the stores grew suspicious and contacted the authorities. The police then discovered that the man was accused of stealing two vintage Pokemon TCG booster boxes – one from the Base Set and one from Neo Destiny – as well as five Charizard cards and a Blastoise card.
Man Suspected of Stealing $115,000 in Pokemon Cards Arrested
1st Edition Collectibles managed to retrieve two boxes of stolen Pokémon cards following the suspect’s arrest. However, these boxes had already been opened, thereby diminishing their market value. Later on, the investigation led detectives to the suspect’s residence where they found the remaining stolen items in a shoebox. Filipe Andre, one of the co-owners of the store, expressed gratitude towards other trading card store owners for alerting the police and felt relieved that the police had recovered the valuable Pokémon cards that were stolen.
Despite instances of trading card theft being regrettably frequent, the enthusiasm for the Pokemon TCG continues unabated, with fans still passionate about their pocket monsters. On July 18, the latest Black Bolt and White Flare expansion made its debut, offering 345 cards showcasing Gen 5 Pokemon for collectors to snag. Among them is the sought-after Victini Black White Rare, a valuable card that one dedicated Pokemon collector managed to acquire not once, but twice.
