As a long-time Pokémon Trainer with over two decades of collecting and battling under my belt, I must say that the latest addition to our card-battling arsenal, Pokemon TCG Pocket, has been a delightful journey so far! However, being a seasoned veteran, I’ve noticed a slight imbalance in the EX card department.
The Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket has been around for about a month now, and during this time, a strong strategy (meta) has developed based on the cards found in its initial Genetic Apex set. Some of the strongest cards in Pokemon TCG Pocket are the EX versions of creatures such as Mewtwo, Pikachu, and Blastoise. However, there are still many monsters that don’t have an EX card in the game yet, and it is hoped that a future update will add more EX cards to Pokemon TCG Pocket.
In the Pokemon TCG Pocket game, EX cards are often the main focus of a player’s deck, as they represent the strongest cards one can play. To maintain balance, opponents receive two points instead of one when defeating an EX card, compared to regular cards. Despite this disadvantage, many top decks in the Pokemon TCG Pocket meta heavily rely on EX cards for victory, making them highly desirable cards for players aiming to construct a successful deck.
In order to fit the compact, simplified style of Pokemon TCG Pocket, these digital cards might be designed a bit differently than their traditional physical versions.
Pokemon EX Cards That Should Be Added to Pokemon TCG Pocket
Snorlax EX
In simpler terms, Snorlax is a well-known creature from Generation 1 that’s already featured in Pokemon TCG Pocket, but it doesn’t have an EX version yet. The current Snorlax card in Pokemon TCG Pocket has a decent HP of 150 and the attack Rollout which needs four colorless energy to activate, dealing 70 damage. However, due to the high cost of this attack and Snorlax’s retreat cost of four energy, it’s not as effective as it could be, despite its large HP pool. Introducing an EX version of the card could provide a secondary, less energy-intensive attack or even more HP to balance these disadvantages.
Tyranitar EX
As a dedicated Pokémon TCG Pocket fan, I find myself yearning for a Darkness-type EX card, given the current Genetic Apex set’s focus on Generation 1 creatures. The lack of such cards presents an exciting opportunity for future sets to fill this gap, especially considering Mewtwo EX’s influence in the current metagame.
Scizor EX
In the current Pokemon TCG Pocket Genetic Apex set, the Metal type is lacking an EX card, similar to the Darkness type. However, if a new set were to introduce an EX card for the Metal type, Scizor would be an excellent choice to emulate. Although it may need adjustments to suit the smaller scale of Pokemon TCG Pocket, the Scizor EX card from Temporal Forces could serve as a great model for this potential addition. Its Steel Wing and Cross Breaker attacks, each requiring only two energy and capable of dealing significant damage, make it an ideal fit. This reimagined Scizor EX would be an excellent partner to existing Metal-type cards in the game such as Melmetal and Bisharp.
Koraidon EX and Miraidon EX
It’s possible that the Gen 9 Legendaries from Pokemon TCG Pocket’s upcoming set, Koraidon EX and Miraidon EX, may not be immediately included, but it seems fitting for them to eventually join the game. The promotional versions of these cards in the base Scarlet and Violet set have abilities that enable them to attach energy to cards currently in play, a feature that is rare yet incredibly useful within Pokemon TCG Pocket. If introduced as variations, these cards would not only stimulate energy cycling, but their popularity could make them highly sought-after chase cards among collectors in the Pokemon TCG Pocket community.
