A player of the Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket has proposed a new expansion that would bring back classic cards from the very first Pokemon Trading Card Game sets, and the idea is gaining a lot of traction with fans. While Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket recently celebrated its first anniversary, the original physical card game has been around since the mid-1990s, and many players are excited about the possibility of celebrating its history.

Launched on October 30, 2024, Pokemon TCG Pocket has quickly become a hit, revitalizing the traditional trading card game. It features faster gameplay, streamlined decks, and eliminates the need for energy cards. Players who log in daily also receive at least two free card packs. Developed by Creatures Inc. and DeNa, the game has already been downloaded over 150 million times worldwide. In its first year, Pokemon TCG Pocket generated an estimated $1.3 billion in revenue, becoming the top-earning Pokemon mobile game and surpassing Pokemon GO.

As a long-time Pokémon fan, I think this is a brilliant idea! Someone on Reddit, user Ok-Pie-3581, suggested bringing classic Pokémon cards from the very first edition of the Trading Card Game into the mobile card battler. Imagine seeing those original package art versions of Pokémon like Charmander, Blastoise, and Venusaur brought to life digitally! They’re proposing expansions themed around the Pokémon Red, Blue, and Green versions, each with cards pulled straight from the original 1996 Japanese TCG set – the one that eventually came to the West in 1998. It would be such a nostalgic blast!

The inspiration for this comes from the 30th anniversary of the Pokemon Trading Card Game on February 27, 2026. The popularity of the mobile game could be a great way to honor the original tabletop game it’s based on. The first anniversary of Pokemon TCG Pocket was a major event, offering special challenges, collectible cards from older sets, and promo cards that allowed players to get cards they might have missed before.

Some players believe directly porting cards from the original physical game into Pokemon TCG Pocket would be a mistake. The mobile game has become much more powerful, quickly making even the strongest cards from the game’s early months ineffective in competitive play. The recent addition of Mega Evolution, with cards capable of dealing hundreds of damage and having over 200 HP by the second turn, highlights this issue. For example, the original Charizard card only has 120 HP and requires a lot of energy to attack. While one fan suggested boosting the power of these classic cards, the person who initially proposed adding them prefers to keep them as they are – collectible digital items rather than competitive staples.

Although the developers haven’t officially announced a 30th anniversary event for the mobile game in February, it’s still possible. The current plan for Pokemon TCG Pocket includes a Wonder Pick event featuring Drifblim and Eevee starting December 7th, followed by a new booster pack on December 17th. We don’t know what’s planned for the new year yet, but if DeNa and Creatures Inc. are planning a celebration for the anniversary, they’ll need to announce it soon.
