Pokemon TCG Pocket Has Fixed One of Its Biggest Problems

The popular card game Pokemon TCG Pocket has changed where shiny Pokemon cards appear in booster packs, now placing them in the sixth slot. Although this makes shiny cards harder to find, many players are happy with the update. Shiny cards debuted with the Shining Revelry expansion in March 2025 and have been a hit ever since, but their placement within packs had previously been a point of contention among fans.

If you’re new to Pokemon TCG Pocket, its card rarity system works much like the regular Pokemon Trading Card Game. However, the game also has its own system for determining which cards you get in booster packs. Before this update, shiny cards appeared more often in the fourth and fifth slots of a pack—the same spots where you’d typically find other rare cards and EX Pokemon. The game’s developer, DeNA, has changed this to make getting different types of cards more balanced.

Pokemon TCG Pocket Pushes Shiny Cards to the Sixth Slot

A recent update to Pokemon TCG Pocket has changed how shiny cards appear in booster packs. Now, if you find a special six-card pack (which appear randomly with about an 8% chance alongside regular five-card packs), any shiny card you get will always be in the last slot. Previously, that final slot was usually filled with baby Pokemon. While this makes shiny cards harder to find, players are happy that this change prevents them from interfering with the appearance rates of other cards.

Many players didn’t like shiny cards in Pokemon TCG Pocket because they frequently appeared instead of more useful rare cards, particularly powerful EX Pokemon needed for building strong decks. Also, shiny cards were often found in ‘god packs’ – special, expensive booster packs – which disappointed players who expected to find truly rare and collectible cards like crowns, not shinies. A recent update has solved this issue by making sure shiny cards don’t affect the chances of getting other rare cards, effectively making them purely cosmetic items – which is what many players originally wanted.

In the Pokemon TCG Pocket‘s Mega Rising expansion, the chance of getting a “shiny one” card from a six-card pack is now 6.818%, while “shiny two” cards have a 7.955% pull rate.

The October update includes several improvements players have been asking for! The level cap is now 60, players can build larger decks with a limit of 25 cards, and they can customize which booster packs appear on the home screen. These changes, along with the removal of visual distractions for competitive card collectors, have significantly boosted player satisfaction. Now, the big question is whether DeNA can keep this positive trend going and attract more players back to Pokemon TCG Pocket.
