Fans of the Pokemon Trading Card Game (TCG) Pocket edition are poking fun at a controversial placeholder image for two allegedly plagiarized cards in the Wisdom of Sea and Sky expansion pack. The issue of plagiarism came to light shortly after the A4 set leak, with one artist asserting that the immersive Ho-Oh EX card in Pokemon TCG Pocket is a direct copy of their 2021 design.
Pokemon TCG Pocket admitted to the allegations by accepting accountability. As stated in their official announcement, it appears that the card production team unintentionally used fan art as official artwork for a commissioned artist, resulting in accidental plagiarism. Recognizing the problem, Pokemon TCG Pocket also declared that the immersive card illustrations of Ho-Oh EX and Lugia EX from the set will be temporarily taken down and replaced with a placeholder until new artwork is prepared.
Players opening the new Sea and Sky booster packs in Wisdom of Pokemon TCG Pocket discovered that the developer’s “temporary placeholder” was simply a plain background with the text “New Art Coming Soon.” Naturally, some fans have humorously shared their own creative drawings of Ho-Oh EX and Lugia EX to fill in for the missing artwork.
Pokemon TCG Pocket Fans Are Sharing ‘Hilarious’ Immersive Art Placeholders
As a devoted admirer, I’ve created this artwork and generously offer it as a stand-in for the developers, at no cost. This sketch symbolizes the Legendary Pokemon bird Ho-Oh. Similarly, another enthusiast has shared an engaging card design adorned with the name “Lugia” written on a white background, complete with exclamation marks. They claim this to be the ideal substitute for the absent artwork and animation that’s currently missing in the game.
Without joking around, the announcement of Pokemon TCG Pocket has been met with approval by many fans, who view it as a positive decision. It’s significant that the company acknowledged the issue and took responsibility directly, which appears to resonate with the community. Some fans have even proposed that The Pokemon Company should hire or compensate the artist whose work was copied, an action that wouldn’t be unprecedented in the game, as the Gardevoir card in Pokemon TCG Pocket already showcases fan-created artwork from a past contest.
It’s yet unclear whether the temporary artwork cards will be replaced by the same creators as before or if the developer will choose fresh commissions instead. Regardless, enthusiasts are eagerly anticipating the arrival of the new cards without delay. Keep in mind, immersive versions are quite scarce within the Pokemon TCG Pocket collection, and those who managed to obtain Lugia and Ho-Oh editions can hardly contain their excitement for the updated animations.
