Pokemon TCG Pocket Update Addresses the Plagiarism Controversy

The Pokémon TCG Pocket version has recently introduced new illustrations for the legendary creatures from Generation 2, as the initial artwork on Ho-Oh EX and Lugia EX cards were removed due to allegations of plagiarism. In the latest update of Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket, these iconic characters from Pokémon Gold and Silver games are receiving a revamped, non-controversial design.

The “Wisdom of the Sea and Sky” expansion for the mobile card battler game was launched on July 30, 2024. Since its debut at the end of October 2024, new expansions have been introduced almost monthly to the “Pokemon TCG Pocket” game. However, the July release stood out as exceptionally large, introducing a total of 241 “Wisdom of the Sea and Sky” cards across two different packs. These cards included variations such as shinies and special full-art cards.

Pokemon TCG Pocket Updates Ho-oh EX After Plagiarism Scandal

Despite the upcoming release of the Pokemon TCG Pocket packs, allegations of plagiarism against Ho-Oh EX card artwork emerged a day prior. Artist lanjiujiu posted a side-by-side comparison of their 2021 artwork and the Ho-Oh EX card preview, revealing similarities. Consequently, the questionable artwork was removed, replaced with a simple salmon pink background and “New Art Coming Soon” in white text for those who drew Ho-Oh EX cards from the Wisdom of the Sea and Sky packs. The recent 37 MB update rectifies this issue by replacing the old artwork for both three-star Ho-Oh EX and Lugia EX cards, even for players who had previously obtained them. In a statement on the game’s news page, the development team expresses their apologies for any inconvenience caused.

Approximately a week following the expansion’s release, the most recent apology along with the alteration of the cards’ artwork appears to have resolved the controversy. However, this isn’t the first time the developers have openly discussed this issue. Although not mentioned in the game’s app news on the launch date, the official Twitter account did respond to the plagiarism accusations regarding Pokmeon TCG Pocket. They clarified that the assigned illustrator for these two cards received “misleading reference materials.” The tweet also revealed that new artwork was being created and an investigation was initiated to ascertain whether any other cards shared similar issues.

Despite the debate, the July end update appears to be popular, as improvements to the user experience within Pokemon TCG Pocket have been well-received by fans. These enhancements include the ability to buy Hourglass Packs in larger quantities and viewing the number of owned cards on the Pack Points Exchange interface.
