Summary
- Pokemon TCG Pocket’s new event may violate consumer laws due to lack of transparency.
- Strict regulations in China require drop rates disclosure in gacha games like TCG Pocket.
- Players criticize misleading instructions and RNG reliance in the Sneak Peek feature.
Supporters of the Pokemon TCG Pocket game have expressed concern that the Sneak Peek feature might be considered unlawful. By this, they mean a recently introduced special event on April 3, which some believe may not provide enough clarity about one particular aspect, potentially infringing upon consumer rights and protection laws. It’s worth noting that other gacha games have faced similar accusations of legal transgressions in the past. Yet, it seems that Pokemon TCG Pocket could be the first to face such allegations specifically.
As gacha games gain more popularity and become increasingly addictive, some authorities in areas like China and Europe have suggested new consumer protection laws to shield gamers from exploitation related to gacha systems. One stringent gaming law emerged from China, requiring all video game developers to reveal the probabilities of loot boxes and random items. Consequently, many gacha games, including Pokemon TCG Pocket, have made public their drop rates and pity systems to assist players in comprehending what they’re spending money on. However, a contingent of TCG Pocket players suspect that the game’s recent event might be violating these legal guidelines.
Reddit user BigGreyCatOwner expressed worries about the game TCG Pocket’s Wonder Pick’s Sneak Peek campaign, suggesting it might be illegal. They believe that since players must spend Poke Gold to obtain Wonder Hourglasses without knowing the probability of receiving a “Sneak Peek,” the developer should have disclosed these odds. Since the event seems to depend solely on random number generation (RNG), which could be seen as questionable under certain jurisdictions, it may potentially conflict with laws in specific regions and countries.
TCG Pocket’s Sneak Peek Event Could Violate Some Laws
In TCG Pocket’s regular Wonder Picks, players can select one out of five hidden cards that were previously in another player’s booster pack. But when Sneak Peek kicks in, the initially chosen card is unveiled without concluding the Wonder Pick, giving the player an opportunity to make a new selection if they’re not satisfied with their first choice.
In the same Reddit discussion, some players pointed out another problem with the event: deceptive guidelines. They claim that the game’s text and pop-up messages give a misleading impression that a player’s current Wonder Pick comes with a Sneak Peek chance. However, in truth, it doesn’t, and players often find themselves using Wonder Stamina only to discover later that their pick wasn’t eligible for the feature. So far, The Pokemon Company and DeNA, the game developers, haven’t addressed these concerns or complaints. With the growing dissatisfaction within the community, it remains uncertain whether the Sneak Peek function will be reintroduced in future Pokemon TCG Pocket events.
