The latest information about the Pokemon Trading Card Game reveals that it will be releasing six cards from the Mega Evolution set on September 26. At present, the ongoing set in the game is called Black Bolt and White Flare.
The concept of Mega Evolution was initially presented in the Pokemon X & Y video games, allowing specific Pokemon to undergo a potent, yet transient, evolution during battles. This feature was later incorporated into the Trading Card Game with the XY set in 2014. However, the game abandoned Mega Evolutions approximately 10 years ago, adjusting its mechanics to align with the then-contemporary Pokemon games. Now, there’s a growing emphasis on Prismatic Evolutions; yet, the Pokémon Trading Card Game is preparing to transition away from this focus as well.
At the Pokemon Presents event held on July 22, 2025, spectators got their initial glimpse of the upcoming Mega Evolution expansion. Six full-art cards were displayed as part of the forthcoming collection. Most of these cards are EX variants of Pokémon that undergo Mega Evolution, but it was also revealed that every Bulbasaur family member will have a full-art card too. The only EX card shown among the three is Mega Venusaur. This aligns with a recent statement from The Pokemon Company, suggesting that the Pokémon Trading Card Game will reintroduce the Mega Evolution mechanic.
All Cards Revealed in the Pokemon Trading Card Game Mega Evolution Set So Far
- Bulbasaur
- Ivysaur
- Mega Venusaur EX
- Mega Lucario EX
- Mega Kangaskhan EX
- Mega Gardevoir EX
Apart from displaying a few cards from the upcoming collection, the event also unveiled that Mega Evolution will be introduced on September 26, 2025. This timing is just before the launch of the Pokemon Legends: Z-A game, scheduled for October 16, 2025, and it’s probably the primary cause for bringing back Mega Evolutions. Consequently, the Pokemon Trading Card Game set could include numerous returning Mega Evolutions related to this game. However, additional evolutions might appear in future sets, such as the newly disclosed Mega Dragonite for Pokemon Legends: Z-A, which was unveiled at the same time as the Mega Evolution release date announcement.
During Pokémon Presents, there were numerous other announcements besides just the new Mystery Code for Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. This news left fans brimming with excitement, regardless of which aspect of the series they prefer. In terms of the Trading Card Game, enthusiasts can anticipate encountering more Mega Evolutions in their draws. However, as the 10th generation of Pokémon unfolds, the card game is expected to adjust accordingly.
