Pokemon Winds and Waves May Finally Have an Almost Perfect Starter Trifecta (With No Fighting-Type)

The new Pokémon game, Pokémon Winds and Waves, was revealed on Pokémon Day with a trailer showing gameplay and the game’s Southeast Asia-inspired region. It also introduced the three new starter Pokémon! Fans immediately responded with a lot of excitement on social media, creating fantastic artwork of Browt, Pombon, and Gecqua, and even imagining what their evolved forms might look like. With the game not releasing until 2027, it could be a while before we see another trailer – possibly around summer 2026. However, since Pokémon typically keeps starter evolutions a secret, now is a great time to speculate about what those evolutions could be and what new type combinations they might introduce.

As a Pokémon fan, I’m really hoping the starters in the new Pokémon Winds and Waves games are something special! Lately, it feels like we’ve seen the same type combinations over and over, and if they reuse them again, especially if they include Fighting-types, the starters could end up feeling a little boring. But I’m optimistic! The game seems to be drawing a lot of inspiration from Southeast Asian mythology and creatures, which means we might finally get some truly unique starter types – and from what I’ve heard, Fighting might not even be in the mix! That would be amazing.

I’ve been checking out fan art for the evolved forms of Browt, Pombon, and Gecqua from Pokemon Winds and Waves, and it’s cool how certain ideas keep popping up. It makes me think the artists are onto something about what their evolutions might actually look like. Take Gecqua, for example. A lot of the fan art shows it with an extra water droplet on its forehead that looks like a third eye, and purple eyes too. Considering the Pokedex says it’s super smart, I’m getting a strong feeling it’s gonna be a Psychic-type when it evolves. It all adds up!

  • Gecqua has geisha-like poses and movements, but it’s also seen on all fours, which is more in line with geckos and similar species, like the Komodo Dragon (which is endemic to Southeast Asia).
  • Pombon is a Pomeranian dog-like critter, and seems to be the epitome of good-natured animals. Interestingly, Balinese folklore includes a creature called Barong, which is the king of spirits and represents the ultimate good.
  • Browt may have a clear inspiration for its final evolution in Garuda, which is commonly part of Hindu and Buddhist mythology. This is referred to as “king of birds,” and the creature often has horns or a crest originating from its brow.

This is significant because the initial Pokémon choices might be inspired by creatures and legends from Southeast Asia. Considering this, a fitting theme for Generation 10 could be “legends.” Barong and Garuda are both well-known figures from folklore, and the Komodo Dragon also has roots in traditional stories. For example, the legend of Putri Naga, or Dragon Princess, tells of how she had a son and a daughter who was a Komodo Dragon. This daughter lived in the forest and is believed to be the ancestor of all Komodo Dragons in Indonesia.

Predicting Pokemon Winds and Waves’ Starter Type Trifecta

Okay, so when thinking about the starter Pokemon types in Pokemon Winds and Waves, I realized all the different inspirations for the game – things like mythology and nature – could actually show up in their types. Here’s how I think those combinations could work out:

  • Browt’s evolution could be Grass/Dragon, inspired by Garuda
  • Pombon’s evolution could be Fire/Fairy, inspired by Barong
  • Gecqua’s evolution could be Water/Poison, inspired by Komodo Dragons

This is not exactly a perfect trifecta, but there are merits to it:

  • Grass/Dragon is weak 4x to Ice and 2x to Flying, Poison, Bug, Dragon, and Fairy. This means that it wouldn’t take supereffective damage from Pombon’s Fire type, but it would from Fairy. It wouldn’t deal double damage to any of the other starters, but Grass/Dragon is a powerful type combination in Pokemon that would make Browt’s evolution very appealing.
  • Fire/Fairy Pokemon are not yet present in the roster, so this would be the first. The reason it’s a good type is that it’s only weak to Water, Poison, Ground, and Rock, while having seven resistances and one immunity to Dragon. Offensively, it would deal half the damage to Water and Poison with its STAB attacks, but it would be supereffective against Dragon.
  • Water/Poison is only weak to Ground, Electric, and Psychic, which means it resists or takes neutral damage from all the other types in this trifecta, including Grass. On the other hand, offensively, it deals supereffective STAB damage to Fire/Fairy with both Water and Poison, whereas Grass/Dragon resists Water and takes double damage from Poison.

Why Grass/Dragon, Fire/Fairy, and Water/Poison Would Work

This particular combination of starter types wouldn’t be very well-rounded. A Water/Poison type would be super effective against both Fire/Fairy and Grass/Dragon, while Grass/Dragon wouldn’t have a strong advantage against any other starter. However, Pokémon Legends: Z-A did something similar with its starters, giving them new Mega Evolutions and type combinations. Meganium became Grass/Fairy, Feraligatr became Water/Dragon, and Emboar stayed Fire/Fighting. This isn’t a perfect system – Fairy is super effective against both Fighting and Dragon, and the other two types don’t have a clear advantage – but it works by still providing a reasonable level of overall balance.

I’m really excited about the potential for Pokemon Winds and Waves! I think it would be awesome if the region was based on local folklore – it would add so much depth. And when it comes to the starter Pokemon, I’m hoping they pick types that work well together, without one being way too strong. Some people might worry that a Grass/Dragon starter like Browt would be at a disadvantage, but honestly, Dragon-type moves aren’t resisted by anything, and Fairy is the only type immune to them. That could make for a really cool and balanced trio for the tenth generation, and tying it all into local legends would be the perfect finishing touch!
