Pokemon World Championships Gets Shake-Up After Multiple Teams Drop Out

2025 Pokemon World Championships series is set to commence in Anaheim, California, and the excitement is high among fans. However, a surprise has hit the community as some competitors, including every Chinese team competing in the Pokemon Unite division, have been unable to obtain immigration entry into the U.S., leading them to withdraw from the tournament. The Pokemon competition brings together players worldwide, but with several teams now excluded from attending, let alone competing after qualifying, people are questioning if future events should consider hosts outside of the United States due to potential immigration issues.

2004 marked the inaugural year for the Pokemon Worlds Championship, a competition where gamers showcased their skills in the classic Pokemon Trading Card Game. Since then, the event has expanded to encompass both digital and physical forms of Pokemon, such as video games like Pokemon GO and Pokemon Unite, among others. Billed as an international tournament, it has faced criticisms due to factors limiting participant access, causing frustration among teams and spectators alike.

Pokemon World Championship Loses Multiple Teams to Visa Issues

Based on various reports on social media, several teams such as Infamous Gaming from Peru, Nova Esports and Champion Road (Liten Dream Factory) from China, Team TC, and Last Dance have had to pull out of the Pokemon World Championships 2025. The main reasons appear to be immigration hurdles and internal problems. Notably, all Chinese teams that qualified for the Pokemon Unite World Championship were unable to participate due to visa denials for their players entering the United States. Although the specific details behind the visa issues have not been disclosed by any of the affected teams, there’s been a surge in discussions about whether upcoming events should be hosted in countries with less restrictive entry policies, ensuring a truly global tournament.

Navigating immigration can be a complex journey for numerous travelers. This challenge extends to esports and conventional athletes, who have been barred from participating in international competitions due to visa difficulties. Occasionally, it’s the players, teams, or management who are responsible for submitting paperwork late or incorrectly. However, there have been several instances where people were denied entry for seemingly unnecessary reasons. For example, in 2024, Moist Esports took legal action against US Immigration over their refusal to issue visas to players based on what was considered questionable reasoning regarding the players’ eligibility to enter the U.S.

With the United States scheduled to host both the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the 2028 Summer Olympics, concerns are arising about whether immigration policies might continue to pose challenges for international participants, much like they have with the Pokemon World Championships 2025. It’s yet to be determined how the absence of these teams could influence the outcomes and future editions of the Pokemon World Championships competition.
