Despite being released 12 years after the Nintendo 3DS Pokémon games, Pokémon Legends: Z-A takes place only two years after Pokémon X and Y. In that time, Lumiose City has changed a lot, largely due to a new group within the game that’s trying to strengthen the bond between Pokémon and humans.

On November 3rd, a Reddit user named DaPokeMaster122_ shared a picture of themselves playing Pokemon X/Y and titled it “What Wild Zone 1 used to be.” The image depicts the player character standing on a street, likely in the southern area of Lumiose City – the same location where Wild Zone 1 appears in Pokemon Legends: Z-A.
This image clearly shows how the look of the Pokemon series has changed over the past ten years. Comparing the art styles of Pokemon X and Y to Pokemon Legends: Z-A, you can see a shift from a more cartoonish, colorful style to a slightly more realistic and detailed one, especially in how the environments and characters are designed.
The image shows how Lumiose City has changed in Pokemon Legends: Z-A. In the game, a street that was once bustling with Pokemon is now an empty, enclosed area called Wild Zone 1, featuring more plants and different Pokemon species. You’ll find very few people – mostly other trainers and shopkeepers – in this new version of the city.
Players discovering the story behind Pokemon Legends: Z-A will find that the company Quasartico Inc. caused the significant changes seen in the game. Between the events of Pokemon X/Y and Legends: Z-A, Quasartico used special holographic barriers to create Wild Zones around Lumiose City. Their goal was to encourage people to move to the city by blending Pokemon and human life, following the storylines of Pokemon X and Y.
