As a long-time Call of Duty fanatic with over a decade of gaming experience under my belt, I must say that Activision’s recent decision regarding Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered and the H2M mod has left me utterly disillusioned. I vividly remember the excitement surrounding Modern Warfare 2 back in 2009, and the thought of reliving those iconic multiplayer moments with a modern touch was tantalizing.
The game “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered” has been targeted by review bombing on Steam due to a dispute between Activision and fans over the termination of a highly anticipated mod (modification) called H2M. While it was well-received when initially released in 2016, “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered” has now become embroiled in controversy, with more than 1,000 negative reviews being left on the game in a single day.
Excited as I was for the upcoming H2M release, a long-awaited modification for Modern Warfare Remastered, which essentially served as a remake of 2009’s Modern Warfare 2, I found myself drawn to Modern Warfare Remastered like never before in anticipation. You see, with a new Call of Duty title dropping every year, this game had been relatively quiet in terms of player activity for quite some time.
Unfortunately, I was eagerly anticipating the release of H2M, but just a day before it was set to go public, Activision stepped in with a cease and desist order for the popular Modern Warfare Remastered mod. The gaming community, being avid fans of Call of Duty, didn’t take this sudden shutdown lightly. In response, they chose to express their displeasure by flooding Steam with negative reviews for Modern Warfare Remastered 2016. As a result, the game’s rating plummeted almost instantly.
Modern Warfare Remastered Plummets to Overwhelmingly Negative
Although its overall rating has shifted towards mixed, the recent review badge for Modern Warfare Remastered has significantly dipped into overwhelmingly negative feedback. Initially, reviews for this game were predominantly positive, boasting a commendable Metacritic score of 83. However, the closure of H2M has led to players protesting by flooding the game with negative reviews as a means of expressing their discontent over Activision’s management of the situation.
Many players express their disappointment that Activision hasn’t planned to create an official remake of Modern Warfare 2’s multiplayer, which was one of the reasons they were excited about H2M. Although Activision did launch a campaign remaster in 2020, they have stated they won’t develop a multiplayer mode for Modern Warfare 2 Remastered.
A Steam user named chattsveryown, among others who refunded Modern Warfare Remastered following a negative review, found it disappointing that Activision took action against mod creators after stopping sales of the game, while allowing thousands to purchase it earlier. Another user, Sad.Sponge, expressed similar sentiments, suggesting that Activision prioritizes revenue over player satisfaction. Although H2M demanded ownership of an original Modern Warfare Remastered copy, it’s unlikely Activision will change their stance and allow the mod to be distributed, despite widespread community backlash.
