The speedrunning platformer appropriately named SpeedRunners is getting a sequel.
This year at the Triple-i Initiative, tinyBuild unveiled SpeedRunners 2: Speed’s Monarch. They plan to launch it on Steam towards the end of this year, followed by its release on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch next year.
The classic SpeedRunners is a 2D side-scrolling racing game. In this game, players gather items they come across to knock each other off the screen, thus eliminating them. Alternatively, they can find quicker routes to outrun their opponents and stay ahead, aiming to be the last one left on the screen (or running, if you will).
Initially launched on Steam Early Access in 2013, the game had its complete release in 2016 and expanded to Xbox One, PS4, and Nintendo Switch in 2017, with a Switch version arriving in 2020. Originally supporting four players racing simultaneously on one screen, SpeedRunners 2 increases this number to eight, promising an even more frenetic experience for both local and online side-scrolling races.
A Key Part Of Its Publisher’s History

One of the early publishing agreements for SpeedRunners, back in 2013, significantly contributed to tinyBuild’s rise as a formidable force in independent game publishing, shaping them into the powerhouse they are known as today.
As the head of tinyBuild, Alex Nichiporchik looks back warmly at the initial game, and can’t wait for players to experience the follow-up.
12 years back, SpeedRunners was the game that ignited tinyBuild’s publishing adventure, and we’re ecstatic to rejuvenate this classic series. In SpeedRunners 2: King of Speed, we’re aiming to elevate everything to a higher level while maintaining what made the initial game so unique and endearing.
In a twist of events, the development of SpeedRunners 2 is being handled by Fair Play Labs, known for creating Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl games, while some core team members from the original SpeedRunners developer, DoubleDutch Games, are back to offer their expertise and ensure that the sequel maintains its original essence.
The new version of the game emphasizes its competitive aspect significantly. It maintains the fast-paced and smooth play mechanics from the original, but offers enhanced graphics and better network code to ensure a smoother online gaming experience. For dedicated gamers, it introduces leaderboards and tournaments, following in the footsteps of the thriving competitive community from the first game.
People who prefer a more relaxed gaming experience can still create private rooms for racing with their friends, where they can enjoy the mayhem without the competitive pressure.
In essence, SpeedRunners 2, similar to its original version, borrows elements from the Mario Kart series, featuring power-ups spread across every level. This results in a fierce rivalry akin to Mario Kart, but instead of taking place in a three-dimensional world, it unfolds on a side-scrolling 2D plane. However, this change in dimension doesn’t dilute the adrenaline-pumping nature of the races in any way.
In this updated version, you’ll find the blend of vintage futurism and superhero team once more, accompanied by fresh figures to control. These new additions can navigate, leap, fire, and traverse using the grappling hook across the meticulously designed levels.
