Popular PS5 Feature Has Mysteriously Disappeared

Key Takeaways

  • The PS5 lost its Resume Activity button in mid-September 2024.
  • Some recent developments suggest that the feature is gone for good.
  • Resume Activity was previously supported in select games as a way to jump back into them without cold-booting them.

As a seasoned gamer who has been through multiple console generations, I must say the disappearance of the Resume Activity feature from the PS5 is a significant blow to my gaming lifestyle. It was one of those small yet incredibly useful features that made my gaming experience more seamless and convenient.

It seems that the much-loved ‘Resume Activity’ functionality on the PlayStation 5 has been taken away more recently, leaving many PlayStation 5 users puzzled due to a lack of clear communication about this change.

Just as suggested by its title, the Resume Activity feature enabled users to quickly resume their last played game (provided it supported this functionality). Instead of starting afresh, they could pick up where they left off. However, following the release of PS5 firmware update version 24.06-10.00.00 in mid-September 2024, this convenient feature is no longer available.

Initially, some PlayStation 5 owners suspected that the Resume Activity button might have been accidentally removed or broken. However, with the recent PS5 firmware update in late October 2024 (version 24.07-10.20.00), these theories seem less plausible. As Screen Rant points out, this update primarily concentrates on enhancing the console’s Activity Cards. This includes the addition of three new categories: Not Started, In Progress, and Completed. Although these categories still conceal potential spoilers like trophy lists, their introduction indicates that Sony is actively developing and refining Activity Cards. Consequently, it seems less probable that the Resume Activity button was inadvertently taken out.

PS5 ‘Resume Activity’ Feature Might Never Come Back

It’s most likely that the feature was intentionally removed, given that the update from mid-September 2024 explicitly stated that a specific activity could only be accessed by starting the game and navigating through menus. The fact that the Resume Activity button wasn’t reinstated in the subsequent patch a few weeks later, and this latest one doesn’t either, suggests that the Resume Activity feature might no longer be available.

At present, you have two methods to continue playing a game on your PS5 after it has been put to sleep. The first is by simply choosing its icon from the primary system menu, and the second is by scrolling down to the bottom of its tab and selecting “Play Game.” However, neither option will mimic the functionality of the Resume Activity button since both choices only restart the console and load any selected game from the beginning.

The PlayStation 5 does not have a feature similar to the Quick Resume function found on the Xbox Series X/S. Microsoft’s version of this feature is more flexible than Sony’s Resume Activity button, as it allows users to suspend multiple games simultaneously, whereas the Resume Activity button only works with specific PS5 titles. Although not all Xbox Series X/S games support Quick Resume, the same can be said for the Resume Activity function on the PS5.
