The popular World of Warcraft addon, ElvUI, will stop receiving updates when the Midnight expansion launches. This decision comes as the upcoming expansion will limit access to the game’s programming interface, effectively breaking many existing addons like ElvUI as they currently function in The War Within.
For the past twenty years, players of World of Warcraft have used addons to personalize their game interface. These customizations have become essential for tackling challenging content like Mythic+ dungeons and raids. Popular addons for the upcoming The War Within expansion include WeakAuras, Deadly Boss Mods, and Details Damage Meter. However, this reliance on addons also presents a challenge for Blizzard, the game’s developer, who often design difficult encounters assuming players will be using them.
Popular World of Warcraft Addon ElvUI Is Hitting The Pause Button For Midnight
Despite being slated for release in early 2026, the next World of Warcraft expansion, Midnight, is already causing problems for addon creators. Luckyone, a developer of the popular ElvUI interface replacement, announced on Twitter that development on ElvUI will be paused for Midnight. This is because Blizzard has changed how addons can access game information in the Midnight alpha version, restricting what they can do. Specifically, Blizzard has limited how much the user interface can be customized, which is a key feature of ElvUI and similar addons. This means ElvUI won’t function correctly when Midnight launches. Luckyone indicated that ElvUI development will only continue if Blizzard changes these restrictions.
Like WeakAuras, the popular World of Warcraft addon ElvUI has temporarily stopped supporting Midnight. However, ElvUI will still work as it is in the upcoming The War Within expansion and Mists of Pandaria Classic. The developers of Midnight are aiming to design raid encounters so players can complete them with minimal or no addon usage, though it’s important to remember that Midnight is currently being tested and all addon-related plans are subject to change based on player feedback.
So, on top of all the drama with the addons, World of Warcraft: Midnight is bringing some big changes to how all the classes play. I’m really curious to see how Blizzard will react now that ElvUI has decided to stop supporting things for a while – it’s a tricky situation!
