Fans of *One Piece* know that appearances can be very misleading. A character who seems weak might actually be incredibly powerful. This is because the world is full of Devil Fruits that give people amazing abilities, turning even the most unassuming person into a formidable fighter. Sometimes, looking weak is actually a strategic advantage, as opponents might underestimate them.
It’s always unexpected and impressive when someone who *looks* weak turns out to be a powerful fighter, especially if they’re allies with the Straw Hat crew. Let’s examine these seemingly unassuming characters in *One Piece* to understand just how strong they are and why people often underestimate them at first glance.
Aokiji
He May Be Lazy And Unbothered, But Aokiji Can Take Down Almost Anyone With His Ice Powers

- First Appearance: Episode 225
You wouldn’t guess Aokiji was a strong Marine Admiral just by looking at him, particularly before the two-year time skip. When he first appeared on Long Ring Long Land to challenge Luffy and the Straw Hat crew, he seemed relaxed and carefree, even wearing a sleeping mask. However, this laid-back appearance completely belied his true strength.
When Aokiji threatened to capture Robin, he used his ice powers to embarrass and slow down Luffy’s crew. They were able to escape, though it was a close call. While Kizaru and Akainu always seem ready for a fight, Aokiji often seems more relaxed and doesn’t quite fit the image of a powerful Marine Admiral.
Koby
Beneath Koby’s Timid Exterior Lies An Incredible Amount Of Raw Power

- First Appearance: Episode 1
It’s amazing to see how far Koby’s come since we first met him! He’s really grown as a character, even though he doesn’t *look* all that different – maybe a bit taller and he’s got new glasses now. I always expected him to become this huge, imposing marine, all muscle, but he’s actually still pretty unassuming. He can come across as a little shy and gets flustered over small things, which is kind of endearing, honestly. It’s cool to see that growth isn’t always about physical power!
Despite appearing unassuming, Koby possesses significant strength developed through years of training with Garp. The Egghead arc demonstrated his incredible power when following orders – he was able to completely defeat Pizarro with a devastating attack called Honesty Impact, which is similar to Garp’s immensely powerful Galaxy Impact.
Sugar
A Little Girl Who Can Play God With Her Devil Fruit

- First Appearance: Episode 608
Sugar appears as a child because of her unique Devil Fruit power. Eating the Hobi Hobi no Mi stops a person from aging, so although she looks about ten years old, she’s actually in her twenties when she meets the Straw Hats. This childlike appearance leads people to underestimate her, which is dangerous because she can turn anyone who gets too close into a toy and erase them from everyone’s memory.
Sugar’s power allowed Doflamingo to control most of Dressrosa by inspiring fear. She essentially decided who lived a good life and who was erased from memory, acting like a god. Sugar uses a deceptive, innocent appearance to attract people before revealing her power and justifying her position as a key member of Doflamingo’s crew.
Bon Clay
A Goofy And Charismatic Character Who Can Turn Into Other People In The Blink Of An Eye

- First Appearance: Episode 78
Most of the Baroque Works members appear dangerous and willing to harm anyone who opposes them or their leader, Crocodile. However, Bon Clay is different. His silly, outgoing personality and flamboyant appearance often make people underestimate him, assuming he’s just a clumsy and lucky member of the team.
Despite his eccentric personality, Bon Clay is surprisingly powerful, even holding his own against Sanji during the Alabasta arc. His Devil Fruit ability allows him to perfectly copy anyone he touches, making him useful in both battles and secret missions, as he can easily disguise himself and go undetected.
Carrot
Carrot’s Innocence Conceals Her Destructive Sulong Form

- First Appearance: Episode 753
Carrot, a member of the Mink tribe, first seems like a cheerful and somewhat sensitive character – more prone to tears than tough battles. With a design clearly based on rabbits, she doesn’t initially appear to be a fearsome pirate or strong fighter. However, everything changes when she activates her Sulong form.
Minks have a powerful ability called Sulong that they can use under the full moon, making them much faster and stronger. As seen with Carrot on Whole Cake Island – she quickly destroyed several ships – it’s a transformation to be taken seriously. Basically, even though she seems sweet and harmless, Carrot can become incredibly dangerous when she needs to.
Zeus
The Puffy And Lovable Cloud Has Fried His Fair Share Of Enemies

- First Appearance: Episode 786
Zeus doesn’t look very threatening, despite being a powerful character. He appears more like a fluffy toy – a bright, puffy cloud with a silly face and a tiny hat – than a dangerous opponent. However, a skilled player can unleash surprisingly strong and deadly attacks with him.
Zeus seems friendly and cheerful, but he’s incredibly powerful – he can unleash devastating electrical attacks on anyone who challenges him or his owner. Although Big Mom didn’t fully recognize his abilities, Nami has successfully used Zeus to defeat many strong enemies, even Uta, a member of the formidable Tobiroppo.
Chopper
Chopper’s Cute Design Completely Disappears When He Goes Into Monster Point

- First Appearance: Episode 81
When Chopper joined Luffy’s crew on Drum Island, it was clear he wasn’t going to be a frontline fighter. He was the crew’s doctor, and much smaller than everyone else. Because of this, many fans assumed he wouldn’t be able to compete with the strong enemies the Straw Hats were sure to encounter on their adventures.
Everything changed when the crew reached Enies Lobby to save Robin. It was then that Chopper first transformed into his massive, monstrous form – a terrifying giant capable of easily overpowering the CP9 agents. While he doesn’t use this incredibly powerful form very often now, fans who have followed the series for a long time remember that this adorable reindeer is capable of unleashing serious destruction when necessary.
Luffy
It’s Difficult For Luffy’s Enemies To Judge His Strength From Appearance Alone

- First Appearance: Episode 1
Someone unfamiliar with Monkey D. Luffy in the world of *One Piece* would likely underestimate him based on looks alone. He appears as a fairly average, slender pirate, distinguished only by his straw hat, large eyes, and constant smile. He doesn’t carry weapons like swords or guns, which leads many enemies to confidently challenge him – a mistake they quickly regret. His unassuming appearance is often his greatest advantage.
Luffy is remarkably powerful, largely due to his Devil Fruit ability. He’s defeated several high-ranking pirates, including Warlords of the Sea and even a Yonko. Many opponents, like Crocodile, Bellamy, and Big Mom, underestimated him because of how he looks, but quickly learned the extent of his strength when he truly fought back.
