Pragmata Director Reveals Why the Game Was Delayed So Many Times

The director of Pragmata explained that the game faced several delays primarily due to the need for careful balancing. Games with science fiction themes, especially those involving robots or unusual alliances, are consistently popular with players. Pragmata, Capcom’s latest original game, aims to deliver both of these elements – robots and an unlikely partnership – alongside unique combat features and a compelling narrative.

Pragmata puts players in the role of Hugh Williams, who finds himself separated from his team at a space research station. He teams up with a young girl named Diana, and together they must find a way to escape a ship overrun by dangerous robots. Pragmata was first shown to fans in 2020 with a puzzling trailer during the PlayStation 5 presentation. Originally planned for release in 2022, the game’s launch was delayed to 2023, and then put on hold with no new release date. Just as fans began to lose hope, Pragmata received positive news in 2025. The development team is now sharing the reasons behind the extended development time.

Balancing Was the Main Reason for Pragmata’s Delay

In a recent conversation with The Gamer, director Cho Yonghee explained that the main cause of Pragmata‘s repeated delays was fine-tuning the game’s balance. He clarified that the fundamental idea and key features of the sci-fi adventure remain unchanged, but getting the Pragmata combat system to work smoothly proved difficult. Yonghee stated there was a great deal of experimentation involved in figuring out what looked and played best. Pragmata producer Naoto Oyama agreed, adding that the game has been in development since 2020 because of the challenge of combining two distinct gameplay styles – Hugo’s shooting and Diana’s hacking.

When asked if revealing Pragmata five years ago caused any regrets, Yonghee offered a different perspective. He believes the announcement actually motivated the development team, stating that without the 2020 trailer, “Pragmata might not be the same game it is today.” Oyama added that the trailer essentially promoted the game, as “people always expected Pragmata whenever there was a digital showcase.”

As a huge fan, I was so excited to see Pragmata at Tokyo Game Show 2025! We finally got a release window – it’s now planned for 2026 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. Capcom also dropped a nearly three-minute trailer giving us another look at the gameplay. One of the coolest parts showed Diana hacking an enemy robot. And get this – after that, there’s a puzzle you can solve that seriously boosts the damage from Hugh’s pistol! I can’t wait! #pragmata
