Predicting Indiana Jones and the Great Circle's Release Window

As someone who has been eagerly awaiting the return of the iconic adventurer Indiana Jones since his last big-screen appearance back in 2008, I can’t help but feel a mix of anticipation and trepidation regarding the upcoming release of “Indiana Jones and the Great Circle.” Having grown up playing the classic adventure games based on the movies, and more recently enjoying the rebooted Wolfenstein series developed by MachineGames, I have high hopes for this first-person action-adventure title.

After a long time of anticipation, it appears that Xbox has been preparing to topple the carefully constructed dominos from the past decade. The fall season looks promising for Xbox users, as numerous significant first-party and exclusive releases are scheduled for each month. With such a busy schedule, even Obsidian’s Avowed has been moved to early next year. However, surprisingly, it seems that Indiana Jones and the Great Circle will still be released this year.

Originally announced as early as January 2021, “Indiana Jones and the Great Circle” is an upcoming first-person action-adventure game developed primarily by MachineGames, known for their work on the recent reboot of the Wolfenstein series. In January of this year, MachineGames provided a first glimpse of “Indiana Jones and the Great Circle,” with a 2024 release window announced. A new trailer for the game was unveiled during Xbox’s June Showcase, but the release date has remained constant since then, even two months later. However, as we approach the end of the year, with only four months left, it’s likely that “Indiana Jones and the Great Circle” will be released soon.

Predicting Indiana Jones and the Great Circle’s Release Date

What Xbox’s 2024 First-Party Line-Up Looks Like

2024’s second half looks quite packed for Xbox enthusiasts. Starting off in September, Age of Mythology: Retold will drop on the 4th, followed by Ara: History Untold on the 24th, providing a strategic double feature for the month. October promises to be a significant month for Activision games on Xbox, as the Vessel of Hatred expansion for Diablo 4 is slated for release on the 8th, and Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 arrives on the 25th. While Black Ops 6 will be available on all contemporary platforms, its inclusion in Xbox Game Pass on launch day adds a competitive edge to Xbox’s lineup.

In November, Xbox gamers can anticipate a flurry of activity as well-known games such as “Flight Simulator 2024,” initially scheduled for release on the 19th, and “STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl,” now slated for the 20th following a delay, are set to hit the market. While “STALKER 2” is not an Xbox first-party production, it will be exclusive to consoles at launch, making it a highly anticipated addition to Game Pass. Additionally, “Starfield’s” Shattered Space expansion and Stoic Studio’s “Towerborne” are scheduled for release in 2024, which could make any of these months remarkably busy.

How Indiana Jones and the Great Circle Could Fit Into Xbox’s 2024 First-Party Line-Up

In September, October, and November, there are at least two significant Xbox exclusive or first-party games scheduled for launch. Although there’s a possibility that “Indiana Jones and the Great Circle” could appear during these months, it seems that Microsoft may prefer to give this highly anticipated game ample time to shine without competing with its own first-party releases. In doing so, they also aim to prevent any potential cannibalization of their other upcoming games.

It appears that the anticipated debut of “Indiana Jones and the Great Circle” is likely to occur in December 2024. At present, Xbox doesn’t have any significant launches scheduled for that month, offering “Indiana Jones and the Great Circle” a whole month without direct competition. Furthermore, when examining the broader 2024 video game release schedule, it seems that no other publishers are planning major releases in December either.

Releasing “Indiana Jones and the Great Circle” in December could be a potentially risky decision. December isn’t typically a favorable time for new games to thrive due to several factors. The awards season has passed, holiday shopping is usually completed by then, and even major releases might struggle to stand out amidst the success of Fall titles. Last year’s “Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora” serves as a case in point. Yet, given its high anticipation among gamers, it’s unlikely that the timing of the release for “Indiana Jones and the Great Circle” would significantly diminish its appeal.
