If you’re a U.S. citizen, it might be wise to prepare for potential price hikes on video game consoles, PC components, and other electronic goods over the next few weeks and months. The U.S. government has imposed a 25% tariff on all imported computer equipment, effective from April 2nd.
These imports include all laptops, desktop parts and components, and, likely, video game consoles.
At the moment, it’s unclear how or when the tariff announcement might affect prices. Over the past year, video game hardware sales in the U.S. have consistently decreased. Given that the increased cost may be passed on to American consumers, it seems reasonable to anticipate that spending will continue to drop.
The anticipated cost for the Nintendo Switch 2 might be higher than expected due to a couple of factors. Firstly, it’s set to retail at $449.99 in the U.S., but there are tariffs involved. The U.S. government has imposed a 46% tariff on goods from Vietnam, where the Switch 2 is being produced. On top of this, there are already existing 25% tariffs. As a result, it’s possible that the price of the latest Nintendo console could rise in the near future due to these tariffs.
In an effort to gather insights from key industry players, TopMob has initiated communication with tech giants such as Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo, Nvidia, Intel, AMD, and other significant PC and gaming hardware companies. Any comments we receive will be incorporated into this piece for a more comprehensive understanding of the potential impact of these tariffs on consumers.
