Police are investigating a major theft at a store owned by NFL star Tom Brady. Someone stole a large number of valuable Pokémon trading cards, and the thief is still on the run.
The Pokémon Trading Card Game is now a significant market, with many stores, collectors, and resellers dealing with valuable cards. Sadly, Pokémon cards are often stolen because they lack unique markings, are small and easy to hide, and can be worth a lot of money. This recent theft at a card shop is just the latest in a growing number of similar incidents.
$10,000 in Pokemon Cards Stolen From Tom Brady-Owned Shop
The NYPD has reported that Tom Brady’s CardVault store was robbed on October 20th. Police say a single thief tricked employees into believing they had successfully paid for a $9,700 purchase of baseball and valuable Pokémon cards. The thief bypassed the payment system by manually entering information into the credit card terminal after the initial transaction was declined, making it appear as if the payment went through. The suspect then left the store with the stolen merchandise.
The shop and police haven’t released details about which cards were stolen, likely because the thief hasn’t been caught yet. They have, however, shared security camera footage of the suspect. While a $10,000 loss is significant, it’s actually a relatively small amount compared to other recent Pokémon card thefts. For example, thieves in Osaka, Japan stole around $70,000 worth of cards earlier this year, and several businesses in the western US have reported losses of hundreds of thousands, with one even reaching $1 million. It’s especially unfortunate that this happened at this particular CardVault by Tom Brady location, as it had only opened in October.
There have been some heartwarming stories about stolen Pokémon cards being returned to their owners. Sometimes, other card shops even help find the thieves. For example, one shop used social media to report a theft, and another local store spotted the stolen cards when someone tried to sell them. Hopefully, CardVault will also be able to recover its stolen cards.
