The newest entry in the Prince of Persia franchise, 2024’s The Lost Crown, is a terrific game.
The game received high marks for its artistic style and selection of the Metroidvania genre, with Prince of Persia’s gameplay proving to be an ideal match.
Regrettably, the game didn’t perform as expected during its initial release, managing to sell just 300,000 units within the first month.
Flash forward a year, though, and you can add a one in front of that number.
Based on Alexandre Guenounou’s LinkedIn profile, where he is listed as the Associate Marketing Director for Ubisoft, it’s been reported that Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown sold more than 1.3 million units.
The Prince of Persia Series Is At a Crossroads
Previously, we pondered over the explanation for the disappointing sales of The Lost Crown, even though it’s an exceptional game.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but feel that the allure of the Prince of Persia franchise isn’t quite what it used to be. The iconic game, “The Sands of Time,” which is often hailed as one of the greatest games ever created, was launched more than two decades ago. Regrettably, there’s a whole generation of gamers who haven’t experienced this classic or any other title from the franchise. Instead, they might be more familiar with the 2010 movie adaptation, which unfortunately didn’t resonate well with audiences, starring Jake Gyllenhaal.
After the ending of the Prince of Persia trilogy (which includes the games Sands of Time, Warrior Within, and The Two Thrones), Ubisoft has found it challenging to advance the series.
2008 marked my return to the captivating world of Prince of Persia with an exciting reboot, and that was followed by The Forgotten Sands in 2010. However, it’s been a long wait for more adventures in this franchise, until last year when there were rumblings about a remake of Sands of Time, a game fans have been eagerly anticipating. Unfortunately, progress on that project has seemed to stall in the depths of development purgatory.
Furthermore, the Metroidvania genre is well-known for offering numerous classic games that often don’t demand the same high price as AAA titles. Given this, one might wonder why gamers would pay full price when they can find a comparable gaming experience at half the cost from the indie market. This is particularly true if the franchise is new to them.
Ubisoft finds itself at a critical juncture with one of their iconic series. Perhaps upon the launch of the remake of the Prisoner of Time, they might manage to reclaim the prestige it once held.
