Prisma has completely blown my expectations out of the water | Hands-off preview

As a seasoned gamer who has navigated countless virtual worlds since the days of 8-bit graphics and pixelated characters, I must say that Prisma has truly caught my eye (or should I say lens?). With its unique concept, captivating combat mechanics, and Latin American folklore influences, it’s like Dreams Uncorporated has taken everything I love about RPGs and blended it into a fresh, innovative experience.

Looking back on 2021, there was an abundance of captivating video games that kept me entertained throughout the year, just as it does every year at this point. When it came time to compile my Game of the Year top tens, I found myself grappling with some difficult decisions. Among these challenging choices was the enchanting game, Cris Tales, which left a lasting impression on me personally.

This stunning RPG bumped some exceptional games, such as Tales of Arise, off my personal list and kept me captivated with its remarkably intelligent turn-based combat. Now, developers Dreams Uncorporated are returning with Prisma, and after a demonstration of the game, I can’t wait to play it myself.

In simpler terms, Prisma is yet another enchanting role-playing game (RPG) where you play as journalist Alma. When she finds a mystical shard from a Prism within an old camera, she’s whisked away to a realm inhabited by other versions of herself. Each of these Almas have followed distinct life paths, and they will join your team for battles. However, not all Almas are combat-oriented; you’ll encounter a shopkeeper Alma who has fallen prey to capitalism and various enemy Almas too. The concept of this game is exceptionally original, making it an ideal fit for the familiar “jobs” system often found in RPGs.

While I find Prisma’s idea intriguing, it’s the combat that genuinely piques my interest. In Prisma, attacks are typically directed in straight lines towards opponents. To inflict maximum damage, aim for multiple enemies simultaneously. Fortunately, Alma’s magic camera makes this a breeze, as you can easily switch lenses to achieve that goal.

The fisheye lens for example curves the edges of the frame allowing you to bend attacks into more enemies, whereas the shattered lens can be used to refract attacks off in multiple directions. Seeing this in action was truly mind blowing, and set my mind racing thinking about all the combat options it opened up.

The Almas in your squad possess unique skills that are beneficial in battles. For instance, there’s Robot Alma, who, having suppressed her emotions, can construct defensive barriers that deflect attacks or serve as rebounders for your projectiles. If Prisma offers innovative combat strategies like this, I’m confident I’ll find it appealing, and many others probably will too.

In simple terms, Prisma is an extraordinary game that significantly surpassed my initial expectations during a brief demo. It’s packed with captivating elements that make me eagerly anticipate its release. Notably, the enemies are designed with influences from Latin American folklore, and there’s a social connection system that strengthens your team of Almas through bonds. It’s been a while since a game has stirred this level of excitement in me during a preview session. Once I get to play it, you, dear readers, will be among the first to hear about it!

As a game enthusiast, I can’t wait to share some exciting news! Prisma is about to start a Kickstarter campaign soon, and if all goes according to plan, we’ll be launching it in no time. Fingers crossed!
