Project Century’s Protagonist May Not Follow One Like a Dragon Trend

As a seasoned cinephile and avid gamer with a particular affinity for Japanese RPGs and beat-em-ups, I must say that Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio’s latest offering, tentatively titled Project Century, has piqued my interest like no other game in recent memory. The trailer, albeit brief, hints at a departure from the studio’s usual fare, and as someone who’s spent countless hours navigating the mean streets of Yokohama with Kiryu, I’m intrigued by this brutal new protagonist.

The upcoming game by Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, tentatively named “Project Century“, could possibly deviate from the conventions established for their previous main characters. With just a single trailer available, the exact nature of “Project Century” remains largely undetermined, including how much it may resemble Ryu Ga Gotoku’s popular series “Like a Dragon“. It’s uncertain at this point if “Project Century” will be connected to that series. However, based on initial impressions, there seems to be one significant aspect where it might differ from other games in its genre.

As a die-hard movie buff and gaming enthusiast, I was thrilled to catch a glimpse of two upcoming masterpieces from the legendary Ryu Ga Gotoku Studios at The Game Awards 2024. One is a reboot of the iconic fighting franchise, Virtua Fighter, and the second is an intriguing new project, Project Century, which has piqued my interest.

Project Century’s Hero is More Brutal Than Any Like a Dragon Lead

Project Century is Ryu Ga Gotoku’s Latest Beat-’em-up

The trailer suggests that Project Century will continue the brawler style reminiscent of Like a Dragon. As you traverse the city, it appears the main character frequently engages in battles with diverse adversaries. Notably, they can utilize items found on the ground and the surrounding environment as weapons, apart from their bare fists. For fans of Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio’s previous brawlers, this game seems like a promising choice. However, the combat also hints at a difference compared to the developer’s past titles, which might influence the game’s overall style and mood significantly.

Project Century’s Lead is Willing to Dish Out Lethal Force

In contrast to the characters from the Like a Dragon series, who typically shun killing their adversaries, the main character in Project Century exhibits a significantly different approach to combat. While Ryoma Sakamoto, a swordsman and gun-user, expressed hesitation towards killing, the protagonist of Project Century is quite ruthless in his fighting style, as demonstrated by him stabbing an enemy with a large knife in the neck. Fights in the Like a Dragon games often became excessively violent. However, the protagonist of Project Century takes urban combat to a more intense and physical level.

In the game Like a Dragon: Ishin!, I employ a rather intense fighting style, yet, interestingly enough, my adversaries seem to survive encounters afterwards.

Project Century and Like a Dragon Have No Confirmed Connections

As a devoted cinema enthusiast, I’ve been pondering over a fascinating possibility regarding the protagonist of “Project Century.” While both are beat-’em-up games set in Japan by the same company and share some thematic similarities, they seem to be on separate paths thus far. This could be because the characters and their worlds haven’t intertwined significantly yet, which might explain why the protagonist of “Project Century” deviates from the mold typically seen in the “Like a Dragon” series. Characters like Kiryu, Ichiban, and Yagami, with their nobility, kindness, and rationality, have made them ideal leads in the “Like a Dragon” universe. However, “Project Century” could introduce us to a protagonist who hails from a world even grittier than what we’ve seen so far, or one who embodies moral ambiguity, perhaps due to their disassociation with “Like a Dragon.

The main character of “Project Century” comes across as intensely formidable and slightly chilling at first glance. It remains unclear if “Project Century” shares ties with the “Like a Dragon” series, but it’s evident that this character deviates drastically from its usual protagonists. With a ruthless demeanor, aggressive actions, and an apparent ability to deliver potentially fatal finishing moves, he may leave a path of blood behind him. At present, his objectives, past, and identity are still shrouded in mystery. Yet, one undeniable fact about the lead character of “Project Century” is that he is much more ruthless compared to previous characters.
