As a gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I’ve seen games rise and fall like the tides of the digital world. Some leave lasting legacies while others are quickly forgotten. Forspoken, the 2023 Square Enix and Luminous Productions action RPG, falls into the latter category, but not without a fight.
Monthly, PS Plus gives subscribers access to replay classic games across Essential, Extra, and Premium levels. This not only introduces new gamers to timeless titles but also lets long-time enthusiasts re-experience their favorites. In December 2024, PS Plus maintains this practice by featuring a game from 2023 that caused quite a debate among players, thereby offering the game another chance to captivate audiences and possibly redefine its standing in the gaming world. That game is Square Enix and Luminous Productions’ 2023 action RPG, Forspoken.
The game Forspoken, released in 2023, stirred up controversy due to the blend of its strong and weak aspects, aiming for a well-rounded gaming experience overall. Regrettably, upon release, Forspoken didn’t make much impact and was soon overshadowed, particularly considering the exceptional caliber of games released that year. However, starting December 17, 2024, PS Plus subscribers will have a chance to replay it at no extra cost, which could revive interest in the game as time has passed since its initial launch.
PS Plus December 2024 Is a Second Chance for Forspoken
Forspoken Was a Divisive Game When It Launched in 2023
Forspoken, one of the most anticipated games of 2023, has been criticized for failing to meet expectations despite its promising start. Its impressive visuals, innovative traversal mechanics, and thrilling combat were initially captivating to fans. However, upon release, it was found to have an uneven execution, with its grand ambition seemingly outweighing its delivery. This inconsistency overshadowed the aspects that were arguably done well, leaving many disappointed.
In simple terms, the world of Forspoken is breathtakingly vast and meticulously designed, leaving you in awe. As the main character, Frey, gains more magical parkour skills, the traversal system, with its unique mechanics, offers an innovative and enjoyable experience. The combat in Forspoken is another standout feature, although it shines particularly in specific areas. Firstly, Frey’s combat moves are visually stunning as they blend various elements to create a vibrant spectacle akin to fireworks. Additionally, the skill system supports fast-paced and fluid combat, allowing us to witness the full extent of Frey’s new powers.
Regrettably, some of Forspoken‘s strong points come with their own drawbacks. For one, while the game’s open world is visually stunning, it can feel alarmingly empty much of the time, with long stretches between objectives and locations devoid of interest. The combat system also has its flaws, tending to favor repetitive strategies even with a variety of abilities at players’ disposal. Another point of contention is the dialogue, which often seems overly humorous given the game’s weighty premise. Lastly, the storyline can be rather predictable and lacks originality, particularly in terms of world-building, especially considering its promising potential.
Forspoken initially faced several significant technical problems upon release, which typically doesn’t lead to a warm welcome from gamers.
PS Plus Subscribers Have Nothing to Lose When Playing Forspoken
With the announcement that “Forspoken” is joining PS Plus Extra and Premium on December 17, subscribers can afford to invest their time without any risk. Although it received a mixed response in 2023, playing it now could prove to be worthwhile. In fact, its inclusion in the PS Plus lineup for December 2024 might rekindle interest in the game, allowing it to step out of the spotlight cast by other major releases in 2023. It’s fair to say that “Forspoken” deserves more attention than it initially received upon its launch last year, so let’s hope its presence on PS Plus this month will help it garner the recognition it deserves.
