PS2 Games that Would Go Viral if Released Now

Man, before everyone was streaming and glued to their phones, the PS2 was dropping some seriously groundbreaking games. It’s wild to think a lot of the big franchises I play now actually started back then – it was a really experimental time for gaming.

It’s fascinating to think how much more successful some older games might have been if they were released today. Now, a single livestreamer can make a game incredibly popular, something that wasn’t possible in the past. Many great titles likely would have found a much wider audience with the help of modern platforms and influencers.

Here are just a few of the ones that would’ve been popping up everywhere if they came out now.

10. Devil May Cry

A Real Bad Leather-clad Lad

Dante, the rebellious and cool protagonist of Devil May Cry, was a gaming icon thanks to his look – a red leather coat, a massive sword, and dual pistols. The game’s combat system was groundbreaking, allowing players to chain together attacks in creative ways. It even scored you on how stylishly you fought!

If the game had released today, we’d already be seeing players share their coolest moves online. Even now, Dante and his friends remain popular characters for cosplay. It makes you wonder just how much more excited fans would be if it were a current release.

9. Okami

A True Piece of Art

Okami is a captivating game with a compelling story, smart puzzles, and an innovative paintbrush system. However, its most memorable feature wasn’t just its gameplay – it was the beautiful and distinctive art style that truly set it apart from other games similar to The Legend of Zelda.

As a huge fan, I always think about how stunning Okami still is! The art style is just incredible – it really looks like a beautiful Japanese painting come to life. And Amaterasu, the white wolf, is honestly one of the most gorgeous video game characters ever. The world itself is breathtaking, filled with these lush, cherry blossom landscapes that make you feel like you’re exploring a truly magical place. Seriously, if this game came out now, everyone’s social media would be flooded with screenshots – it’s that beautiful.

8. Bully

Beat on the Brat

Man, when Bully first dropped back in 2006, it was a total mess of controversy. Everyone was up in arms about it! Some people claimed the game encouraged bullying, but honestly, anyone who actually played it knew that wasn’t true at all. Then you had others getting upset about the fact you could have Jimmy Hopkins, the main character, kiss other guys. Rockstar was getting flak from all sides – it was a weird time. They were taking heat from both conservatives and people on the left!

Honestly, I can just see the chaos this game would cause online right now! Everyone’s so quick to argue on social media, it’d be wild. I’m not even sure if it would be famous for good reasons or bad, but it would be huge, especially with all the streamers jumping in.

7. Mister Mosquito

You Suck at this Game

These days, many games gain popularity on streaming platforms simply because they’re unusual. I’m certain that Mister Mosquito would be a hit for the same reason – it’s delightfully quirky and would likely attract a lot of attention.

The basic idea of the game is simple: you fly around and try to secretly suck the blood of a family. It might sound a bit strange described like that, but Mister Mosquito is actually a charming and funny game with lots of potential for entertaining streaming content.

6. Gitaroo Man

A Six-String Sonata

Platform PlayStation 2
Publisher Koei
Genre Rhythm Game
Release Date February 18, 2002

Okay, so Gitaroo Man is seriously different from other rhythm games I’ve played. Most games just have you hitting notes as they come, but Gitaroo Man throws a ton of variety at you in each level. One minute you’re following a line like usual, the next you’re trying to nail perfectly timed taps in the center of the screen. It keeps things fresh and really gets you into the music!

This game really stands out thanks to its superhero theme, unique cartoon style, and incredible music. If it were released today, you’d be seeing tons of videos of people playing guitar along with the awesome soundtrack!

5. Zone of the Enders

The Giant Robot and The Genius

Zone of the Enders still has some of the most exciting and fast-paced mech battles I’ve ever seen in a game. As someone who loves giant robot action games, it really delivered. However, it wouldn’t be popular today just for its gameplay; there’s something more that would capture attention now.

Absolutely not. The only reason people would play it is because of Hideo Kojima. He’s famous for creating games like Metal Gear and Death Stranding, and he also made Zone of the Enders. Streamers would definitely pick it up just because of his involvement, but I believe they’d continue playing it because it’s a genuinely great game.

4. Twisted Metal: Black

Vehicular Manslaughter

Twisted Metal: Black stands out as a truly exceptional vehicular combat game. Its gritty, dark tone and compelling story revitalized a struggling series. The game made the chaotic experience of driving a weaponized vehicle – like an ice cream truck – and battling opponents with outlandish features surprisingly fun and engaging.

It’s fun to imagine what a game like this would be like if it were released today. It would probably have lots of online features beyond the story mode, and maybe even a huge battle royale mode. It’s just wishful thinking, though.

3. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City

Totally Radical to the Max

Look, as a gamer, I can tell you the GTA series is HUGE – probably the biggest ever. Every time a new GTA game drops, it’s a massive event online, and Vice City was no exception when it first came out. Everyone was talking about it!

For me, this game represented the best of the GTA series. I’m really looking forward to GTA 6 and its return to Vice City, especially the multiplayer aspect. But just imagine how popular it would be on Twitch if people could role-play in a classic, retro Vice City! The online role-playing communities would go wild.

2. Kingdom Hearts

A Whole New World

Sora, with his iconic keyblade and bright yellow shoes, remains a favorite character for gamers. Add in popular Disney and Square Enix characters like Donald Duck, Goofy, and Sephiroth, and you have a recipe for a hugely successful and popular RPG series.

Kingdom Hearts quickly became a fan favorite when it first came out, and continues to hold a special place for those who played it as kids. If it were released now, it would be everywhere online – all the popular gaming channels and Disney-focused influencers would be talking about it.

1. Katamari Damacy

Roll Out!

Katamari Damacy is a delightfully strange game with the potential to become a viral sensation. It’s essentially a simulator where you roll everything into a ball, and it was a wonderfully bizarre and fun experience when it first came out. The dynamic between the King of all Cosmos and his small son is also incredibly charming.

The game was already unique in its concept and how it played, but the addition of the King of Cosmos and his strange dialogue really made it stand out. It had the potential to be incredibly popular – a perfect combination of easy-to-learn, addictive gameplay and appealing visuals that would have made it a hit on streaming platforms.
