As a long-time enthusiast of horror games, I can wholeheartedly affirm that the list presented here strikes a chord with my gaming heartstrings. Having spent countless nights hiding behind sofas and jumping at every creak in my old apartment, these titles have left an indelible mark on my memories (and nightmares).
For quite some time, all fans heard from Konami about Silent Hill was static on the radio, leaving them in an anxious anticipation reminiscent of the haunted town itself, yearning for a revival of their cherished series. The unveiling of Silent Hills and the remarkable game PT appeared to breathe new life into the franchise, but both were ultimately scrapped, with Kojima departing Konami to establish his own gaming studio.
For numerous fans, this seemed to be the definitive end for the iconic series, Silent Hill, as their last flicker of hope faded into oblivion. However, in an unexpected turn of events, unforeseen announcements about new projects emerged, including a remake of Silent Hill 2. This classic horror game from the PlayStation 2 era has captivated many, but there are numerous other hidden treasures from this console that deserve another chance to shine.
7 Obscure
The Market is Ripe for a Horror Multiplayer Experience
Hidden both in title and content, this hidden gem from the PlayStation 2 era embodies all the hallmarks of a traditional horror game: a spooky nighttime high school setting, grotesque creatures lurking in classrooms, a narrative revolving around botched experiments…and a multiplayer mode?
Although Obscure wasn’t the original multiplayer horror game, it was exceptionally uncommon for such games to support multiple players. However, this title bucked the trend by doing just that. Today’s gaming market is flooded with multiplayer titles due to high demand, making a revamped version of Obscure highly appealing to modern gamers. Even if it doesn’t appear on current consoles, its unique concept still warrants attention.
6 Rule of Rose
A Misunderstood Masterpiece
The enigmatic game titled “Rule of Rose” is often embroiled in debate due to its contentious history. Despite being a noteworthy horror title on PlayStation 2, it was prohibited in the UK based on unverified claims about explicit depictions involving minor characters. Although these allegations were proven baseless, the ban persisted. In regions where it wasn’t banned, this game is exceptionally scarce, leading to astronomical prices for those who possess a copy.
This game is truly impressive, boasting a compelling element like Jennifer’s canine ally, integral to her tale of resilience, intimidating adversaries such as imps and the Mermaid Princess, and a hauntingly beautiful soundtrack that intensifies every instant of play. To ensure its longevity, Rule of Rose deserves priority for remakes, and this time it should be accessible to gamers worldwide without geographical restrictions based on content that was never actually part of the original game.
5 Haunting Ground
One of Capcom’s Most Overlooked Titles
In the ominous and daunting Belli Castle, the game titled “Haunting Ground” places players in the shoes of Fiona Belli, who regains consciousness within its fortress walls following an accident that left most of her memories behind. As she navigates her environment, searching for a means to escape, she encounters the castle’s inhabitants, including Debilitas, Daniella, Riccardo, and Lorenzo, each pursuing Fiona for their sinister purposes. Hewie, a helpful ally, becomes Fiona’s primary tools for evasion as she outruns and hides from the wicked adversaries that relentlessly chase and torment her.
Over time, the appeal of horror video games with fragile protagonists has waned, as there’s been a growing emphasis on survival aspects and arming players with weapons. However, a unique terror arises when players are unable to defend themselves. This game, despite showing its age and costing over $100 in today’s market, offers an unsettling experience that warrants a remake. Not only is a remake justified, but essential for modern gamers to genuinely explore one of Capcom’s underappreciated titles.
4 Clocktower 3
The Ambitious Plot Deserves a Revitalized Game
Back in the gaming world, I’ve had my share of encounters with iconic series, and one that might surprise some gamers is Capcom’s chilling horror franchise, Clock Tower. This franchise is etched into the hallowed halls of fear, giving birth to a villain as terrifying as they come – the Scissorman. This guy isn’t your average boogeyman; he’s got a set of oversized scissors that could easily turn you into confetti. And guess who’s back for more carnage? Yup, you guessed it – the Scissorman is making a comeback in Clock Tower 3.
Character Alyssa Hamilton will journey through different time periods to rescue souls of those affected by the villain in a plot of grand and remarkable scale. It’s long past due for Clock Tower 3 to break free from the chains of outdated technology, and be remade so both old and new fans can appreciate this masterpiece with updated graphics and gameplay to enhance the storytelling experience.
3 Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly
One of the Greatest Ghost Hunting Games
In different parts of the world, the game is either known as Fatal Frame or Project Zero. Regardless of the name, it’s universally recognized as the ultimate ghost-hunting video game series. Each title introduces new characters, but the equipment remains consistent: a camera called the camera obscura. This special camera is rumored to have the ability to capture and exorcise ghosts, while also providing clues about the next steps for the player. In the second installment, the twins Mio and Mayu venture into a forgotten village, with Mio taking up the camera in an attempt to rescue her sister.
The Crimson Butterfly, undoubtedly, holds the top spot among its peers, and for good reason. While Sae may instill fear beyond words, her story alongside her twin Yae is shrouded in sorrow, as the destiny of these new twins seems to mirror theirs tragically. This intriguing blend of intense horror and a heart-wrenching tale of affectionate sisterhood makes this game stand out among the Fatal Frame series, warranting a remake more than any other title.
2 Resident Evil CODE: Veronica
The Most Requested Resident Evil Game to be Remade
Fans of Resident Evil have been delighted over time by a series of outstanding original games that returned the franchise to its horror roots, alongside remakes of timeless classics. Titles like Resident Evil 2, 3, and 4 underwent not just cosmetic improvements but a total overhaul, allowing these classic games to run on newer hardware with improved gameplay, visuals, and subtle adjustments to maximize enjoyment.
Among many desired sequels, there’s a strong demand for “Code: Veronica“, an installment in the main series even though it doesn’t bear a number, focusing on Claire Redfield who continues her pursuit of her brother. Her journey lands her as a captive on Rockfort Island, but being a survivor of Raccoon City and a member of the Redfield family, she possesses the skills to escape and protect herself. This title takes place after the events of “Resident Evil 2“, and fans have longed for its remake, yet no official confirmation has been made. Often overlooked in the Resident Evil series, but still exceptional in its unique ways, Capcom should definitely consider adding this game to their list of projects.
1 Silent Hill 3
Another Beloved Silent Hill Title
Although Silent Hill 2 is widely appreciated as a favorite among fans, there’s another game that boasts a loyal following: Silent Hill 3. In this installment, the character from the first game, Cheryl, now known as Heather, finds herself drawn into the grim world of decay and monstrosities while on her way home. This time, she’s also entrusted with the responsibilities of a cult trying to revive their deity. The leader, Claudia, orders the killing of Heather’s father as a ruse to bring Heather out, thereby ending the life of the first protagonist in the Silent Hill series.
In a daring turn of events, both Konami and Claudia took a risky step, yet this move proved advantageous for Konami as it instilled empathy in players towards Heather, while simultaneously sparking a strong desire to retaliate against Claudia. As the game succeeding Silent 2, though not necessarily continuing its narrative, this title merits a remake. It would indeed be surprising if Konami did not eventually decide to breathe new life into this classic for modern gaming platforms.
