PS4 and PS5 Get New System Updates for October 2025

Sony started October by rolling out new system updates for both the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. These updates are now available for download globally. However, similar to past updates, Sony hasn’t included any major new features. The PlayStation 5’s update, version 25.06-12.02.00, and the PlayStation 4’s 13.02 patch primarily address security fixes.

Even though the PlayStation 4 is over ten years old, Sony still releases updates from time to time. These updates help keep players safe while gaming online. With big games like the new Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 still working on the PS4 when they launch, it makes sense that Sony wants to keep the console secure and working well for players worldwide. The latest update for the PS4 came out in September and improved messages and how some screens work.

PS4 and PS5 Both Get New Updates

On October 1st, Sony released a new software update for both the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. The PS4 is now running version 13.02, and the PS5 is on version 25.06-12.02.00. However, these updates are fairly minor. As noted by MP1st in the official patch notes (detailed below), the updates focus solely on security improvements and don’t include any new features.

Gamers who still have the PlayStation 4 but want to upgrade to Sony’s latest console will be happy to hear that a new version of the PlayStation 5 is now available, featuring some noticeable design improvements. The console’s central section has moved away from a shiny finish to a sleek, matte black look, and the PS5 Slim Digital Edition is around 4.23 ounces lighter. However, there’s a trade-off: this new model comes with 825 GB of storage, which is less than the 1 TB found in the previous version.

Because Xbox is consistently releasing its exclusive games on PlayStation 5, Sony’s console is rapidly gaining popularity among gamers. Games like Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Forza Horizon 5, Gears of War: Reloaded, and numerous others have recently become available on PlayStation, and this trend doesn’t appear to be stopping. Just last week, Xbox announced that another of its first-party titles is heading to PlayStation, with Microsoft Flight Simulator scheduled to launch on PS5 on December 8, 2025.
