Starting August 31, the exclusive game for the PlayStation 4 console, known as “Blacklight: Retribution,” will no longer be available. At its launch in 2013, the PlayStation 4 didn’t have a standout must-play game, but it did offer some remarkable titles. “Killzone: Shadow Fall” was billed as the main exclusive launch title for PS4, but other games such as “The Playroom,” “Knack,” and “Resogun” also generated attention.
One intriguing launch title for PlayStation 4 (PS4) was the free-to-play first-person shooter game, “Blacklight: Retribution.” Previously only accessible on PC, “Blacklight: Retribution” was exclusive to PS4 at its release and never appeared on Xbox or Nintendo systems. As such, it became a console-exclusive title for Sony’s platform. The game initially garnered some attention and received years of support, but the PC version ceased operation in 2019 due to a decrease in player numbers. Despite being delisted in 2024, those who had previously downloaded it could still play the PS4 version.
When is Blacklight: Retribution Shutting Down?
Sadly, the PlayStation 4 version of “Blacklight: Retribution” is set to close down as well. This means the game will essentially disappear from the gaming world. Since “Blacklight: Retribution” was removed from the store, it was just a matter of time before the shutdown, and we now know that the game’s operations will end on August 31. From then on, there won’t be any official means for PlayStation 4 players to enjoy “Blacklight: Retribution“.

As a devoted gaming enthusiast, I can’t help but reminisce about the days when I used to enjoy Blacklight: Retribution, an iconic free-to-play FPS that once held its ground in a rapidly evolving market. Despite the passage of time and the industry leaving it behind, the game maintains a certain historical significance.
At its launch, Blacklight: Retribution garnered positive reviews, and its status as a PlayStation 4 launch title lends it an importance that many other games, now defunct, lack. Unfortunately, news of its discontinuation has left a void, underscoring the necessity of initiatives like Stop Killing Games to protect gaming experiences.
Regrettably, there seems to be no way to preserve Blacklight‘s playability, and those who wish to experience it one last time – provided they managed to secure it before its delisting – should aim to do so by August 31.

Besides Blacklight: Retribution, another PlayStation 4 game closing its doors later this year is Skyforge. Moreover, several sports games from Electronic Arts are slated to be discontinued in 2025. The closure of games continues to be a regrettable aspect of the gaming world, and with the PS4 being more than a decade old, it’s likely that additional games on this platform will also cease operation.
