PS4 Gets Surprise New Console Update for September 2025

Sony recently released system update 13.00 for the PlayStation 4, a surprising update twelve years after the console first came out. The PS4 was incredibly popular, and many gamers are still using it even though the PlayStation 5 has been available for five years. New games are still being released for the PS4 in 2025, which helps keep it relevant and extends its lifespan.

Despite being released back in 2013, the PlayStation 4 continues to get new game releases. Recently, the popular team-based shooter *Marvel Rivals* launched on PS4, and *Hollow Knight: Silksong*, a highly praised new game, is also now available. This ongoing interest explains why Sony is still providing updates for the console.

The latest PS4 update, version 13.00, is now available. It mainly focuses on small improvements to messages and how easy the system is to use on certain screens. Given the PS4 is an older console, this update isn’t adding any major new features – it’s more about refining what’s already there.

While Sony still occasionally releases updates for the PS4, support for the console is clearly decreasing. Games that are constantly updated, like *Genshin Impact*, are starting to drop PS4 support, and many more online games are expected to do the same by 2026. Sony is also increasingly prioritizing the PlayStation 5, with fewer new games being released on both consoles and a growing focus on PS5 within the PlayStation Plus service.

PlayStation Plus will be shifting its focus away from PS4 games starting in January 2026. While some PS4 titles might still be added to PlayStation Plus Essential, Extra, and Premium tiers after that date, it won’t be a certainty. If you haven’t upgraded to a PS5 yet, you might want to consider doing so soon, but be aware of a couple of recent problems with the console.

The PlayStation 5 now costs $50 more due to tariffs imposed during the Trump administration, and newer models have less storage space than previous ones. While a price drop and fix for the storage issue are possible, they probably won’t happen in the near future.
