Summary

  • A new PS4 and PS4 Pro patch improves the messages and usability on certain screens.
  • Sony continues to support its last generation of consoles, though recent patches have been small.
  • Rumors suggest a new handheld PlayStation console is in development.

Sony has rolled out an update for both the standard PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 4 Pro consoles. Despite moving their attention towards the PlayStation 5 after its launch in 2020, users are happy to know that Sony will continue to provide updates for these consoles up until at least 2025, and possibly even beyond.

As a dedicated gamer, I can’t deny that my PlayStation 4 has been a staple in my gaming arsenal. With over 117 million units sold worldwide as of last September, it’s no wonder this console is a household name. Compared to the Xbox One, it’s like the PS4 is a two-to-one favorite among gamers!

Being second only to the PlayStation 2 in terms of sales, the PS4 has been my go-to console for years now. Even with the arrival of the PlayStation 5 last year, I find myself still gravitating towards the PS4. Sony’s support for their older consoles over the past few years through occasional updates has been a game-changer, keeping our gaming experience fresh and exciting.

Recently, Sony surprised us all with a brand new update for both the PS4 and PS4 Pro – their first in months! It’s clear that they’re committed to ensuring their loyal gamers have the best possible experience on their consoles.

Sony recently unveiled the specifics of its latest updates for PS4 and PS4 Pro consoles, and as expected, the changes are minimal. The Version 12.50 update primarily focuses on enhancing message display and user interface on certain screens. No modifications have been made to either device regarding other aspects. Interestingly, a comparable PS4 patch was issued in 2025, encompassing software performance and stability enhancements. This is the second PS4 update of the year, with the January 2025 patch addressing minor security concerns. It’s unlikely that significant updates will be rolled out for these systems in the future; however, any useful improvements are always appreciated by gamers.

In the past few weeks, it’s been announced that the rate of PS5 sales has outpaced that of the PS4 by 7%, while the Xbox Series X/S lags behind the Xbox One by a significant 19%. During the holiday season in 2024, approximately 9.5 million PlayStation 5 consoles were sold, marking a growth of 1.3 million units compared to the previous year. As of February 2025, the PS5 has reached sales of over 75 million, thanks in part to the launch of the PlayStation 5 Pro which, despite its high cost, contributed to increased sales.

It seems that whispers suggest Sony might be designing a fresh PlayStation portable console, though it may still be several years before it makes its way to retail outlets. As per leaks, the gadget could possibly run PS5 games and aim to grab a slice of Nintendo’s dominance in portable gaming sales. Additionally, it appears that Xbox is developing a similar handheld device; this development was confirmed by Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer back in November 2024.
