PS4 Will Reportedly Start Losing Some Services in 2026

PlayStation 4 games may no longer be able to use some important online features starting in 2026. This change would mean Sony is speeding up its plans to end support for the PS4.

November 15th will be the 12-year anniversary of the PlayStation 4, Sony’s eighth-generation console. Even though the PS4 continues to receive updates in 2025, Sony has been gradually dedicating fewer resources to it, suggesting that full support will end sometime in the near future.

New PS4 Games Reportedly Losing Access to 6 Key Services in 2026

According to reports from Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson, based on PlayStation documents shared with developers, Sony will likely continue this pattern in 2026 by preventing new PS4 games from using some older PSN features. The changes will affect six services: Activity Feed Web API, Shared Media Web API, Title Small Storage, Title User Storage, Word Filters, and Users and Profiles. However, existing PS4 games that currently use these services will still be able to access them.

PS Plus Is Also Starting to Phase Out PS4 Offerings in 2026

According to the same source, the removal of certain features is planned for spring 2026. This timing is shortly after Sony’s previously announced plan to start removing PS4 games from PlayStation Plus in January. After that, Sony will focus less on PS4 games for PlayStation Plus members. Eventually, the current selection of older-generation third-party games will also be taken off the PS Plus service.

Both Sony’s earlier announcements and a recent report indicate that the company will likely speed up its plans to stop supporting the PS4 in 2026. Restricting developers’ access to fundamental tools like user profiles and game save storage-which are used to retain player data such as preferences and game progress-would strongly discourage them from making new games for the PS4. Removing these features would probably mean the end of large-scale game releases on the console and would also make developers less likely to launch new multiplayer games on the device.

Currently, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 might be the final major game released for the PS4. While Sony will likely continue providing security updates and small improvements for some time, they seem ready to completely discontinue support for the console in the next few years-possibly around the time the PS6 is released around late 2027. Sony stopped making PS4 consoles around 2022-about a year later than expected-because of a shortage of PS5s, which was caused by supply chain problems stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic.
