PS5 Disc Drive FINALLY Back in Stock – But Hurry Before They Vanish AGAIN!

Summary

  • The PS5 disc drive is back in stock at PlayStation Direct and Amazon US.
  • Its stateside shortage is still not over, and this new stock may not last for long.
  • The ongoing shortage is possibly driven by the PS5 Pro, which lacks a variant that includes a disc drive.

As of mid-January 2025, the disc drive for the PlayStation 5 has been restocked at certain U.S. stores. However, given past patterns, it’s advisable for PS5 owners to act promptly as the supply is unlikely to last long.

In 2020, the PS5 Digital Edition marked Sony’s debut of a console without an optical disc drive. Four years later, the PS5 Pro, also devoid of a disc drive, was introduced. Interestingly, both these models and subsequent mid-gen upgrades, as well as Slim versions, can be modified by users who purchase an additional disc drive separately. In the U.S., where Sony’s official attachment has been scarce for several months, many PS5 owners have chosen to install a disc drive.

Although there are ongoing shortages of the PS5 disc drive within the U.S., some national retailers appear to have restocked since the beginning of the year. As of January 15, you can buy this accessory from both Amazon U.S. and Sony’s PlayStation Direct store for its original price of $79.99. Game Rant has also found a third-party vendor on Walmart selling it, but they have inflated the price by 50%, making it $122. This reseller only has three units left in stock, so it’s more of a desperate choice rather than a good opportunity to enable your PS5 to play physical discs.

PlayStation Direct Limits PS5 Disc Drive Orders

On PlayStation Direct, Sony has restricted each customer to only one order for the PS5 disc drive, a policy they’ve used historically to prevent scalpers from buying up popular items in large quantities. For instance, pre-orders on the PlayStation Portal were also limited to one per user, as were orders for their 30th-anniversary consoles and accessories.

For several months now, PS5 owners in the U.S. have been grappling with frustrations due to a shortage of CD drives, and this issue has recently surfaced in the UK since late 2024. The simultaneous occurrence of these problems seems linked to the release of the PS5 Pro, launched on November 7 last year. Unlike the standard PS5 model, the PS5 Pro – Sony’s mid-generation upgrade – doesn’t come with a CD drive. This means that gamers seeking an optimal experience from Sony’s ecosystem while still wanting to play physical games need to purchase the CD drive separately.

Despite the item remaining unavailable at Walmart, GameStop, and Best Buy, it’s evident that stock shortages in the U.S. aren’t close to being resolved just yet. Unfortunately, we can’t predict exactly how long this situation will continue.
