PS5 DualSense Controller Prices Are Getting More Expensive

Key Takeaways

  • Sony has increased the price for most PlayStation 5 DualSense controller models by around $5.
  • The price hike affects multiple regions including the US, UK, and Australia.
  • Sony is also teasing a technical presentation for September 10 that may see the long-rumored PS5 Pro finally announced.

As a seasoned gamer with countless hours logged on my PlayStation 5, I can’t help but feel a twinge of disappointment upon learning about Sony’s recent price hike for their DualSense controllers. I remember the initial excitement when I first got my hands on one, marveling at its innovative features like haptic feedback and adaptive triggers. Now, just a few years later, I find myself reaching deeper into my wallet to get ahold of another one.

As a gaming enthusiast, I’ve noticed an unspoken change in the price tag of my beloved Sony PlayStation 5 DualSense controllers. It seems like they’ve subtly bumped up the cost by five bucks without any formal announcement to us gamers. However, it appears that the new pricing is now in effect at retailers worldwide.

The DualSense controller is often considered to be one of the best controllers in the market today with its haptic feedback capabilities, gyro aiming, and adaptive trigger features. In 2022, PlayStation expanded the controller’s functionality to PC with the DualSense firmware updater app, allowing PC gamers to connect their PS5 controllers and leverage its features in supported titles. PlayStation brought a new premium iteration of the DualSense in 2023 called the DualSense Edge, which caters to gamers wanting mappable and more precise controls in a variety of games. In recent months, PlayStation continued to introduce more DualSense controllers to the market, including the limited-edition Concord and Astro Bot DualSense controllers released on August 23 and September 6 respectively.

According to IGN’s report, Sony has boosted the cost of every PS5 DualSense controller by $5. Controllers in standard colors such as White, Starlight Blue, Galactic Purple, Cosmic Red, Midnight Black, and Gray Camouflage are now priced at $74.99 each instead of $69.99. The higher-priced Cobalt Blue, Sterling Silver, and Volcanic Red DualSense controllers also experienced a $5 increase, raising their price to $79.99 from the previous $74.99. The new pricing can be observed at PlayStation’s official store as well as retailers like Best Buy and Target. At this point, the prices of PS5 consoles, console covers, the DualSense Edge controller, and other accessories have not been affected by this change.

Sony Increases PS5 DualSense Controller Price

  • $5 increase in the US
    • $74.99 for White, Starlight Blue, Galactic Purple, Cosmic Red, Midnight Black, and Gray Camouflage models, previously $69.99
    • $79.99 for Cobalt Blue, Sterling Silver, and Volcanic Red models, previously $74.99
  • £5 increase in the UK
  • $10 increase in Australia

It seems that the rise in prices is being implemented globally, affecting both the UK and Australia. In Britain, the cost of DualSense controllers has gone up by approximately £5, or $6.54. The price hike for DualSense controllers in Australia amounts to 10 Australian dollars, which is around $6.66. On a positive note, these controllers often go on sale, so gamers looking to expand their collection can wait for holiday promotions and save some cash.

The DualSense price increase comes just moments after Sony announced its 9-minute PS5 technical presentation will be held on September 10. The presentation, hosted by PS5 lead architect Mark Cerny, will focus on the console and “innovation in gaming technology.” A potential PS5 Pro announcement could be imminent, if rumors and speculation pointing toward its reveal in September hold true. It’s unclear whether Sony will publicly address the DualSense’s more expensive pricing this week as well, however.
