Housemarque, the team behind *Returnal*, has just shown off the first gameplay footage of their next PlayStation 5 game, *Saros*. They’ve also announced that *Saros* is scheduled to release in early 2026.
Housemarque, the team behind the popular game *Returnal*, revealed their new game, *Saros*, at PlayStation’s February 2025 State of Play. *Saros* is a roguelike game set on the enigmatic planet of Carcosa, and stars Rahul Kohli (known for his roles in *Midnight Mass* and *Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun*) as Arjun Devraj, a futuristic soldier on a mission to find someone. While the announcement was made with a cinematic trailer, Housemarque plans to show off actual gameplay later this year.
Saros is Coming to PS5 in March 2026 With New Gameplay Features
The studio delivered on its promise, kicking off the September 2025 State of Play with over five minutes of gameplay and in-game footage of *Saros*. As many expected, *Saros* feels very similar to *Returnal*, featuring fast-paced movement, futuristic guns, large battle arenas, creatures inspired by Lovecraftian horror, the iconic dash ability, and a chaotic amount of bullets flying across the screen. But *Saros* also introduces some cool new features, most notably the Soltari Shield. By holding down the R1 button, players can create a temporary energy bubble around their character, Arjun, to block incoming projectiles, giving them a few precious seconds to regain control and plan their next move.
The Soltari Shield is a unique defensive tool that doesn’t just block attacks – it actually *absorbs* energy from enemy fire and uses it to power up Arjun’s weapon, allowing for a powerful blast when fully charged. A new feature called Second Chance gives Arjun an extra life, reviving him after taking fatal damage. This revive ability is part of Saros’ overall progression system, but it won’t be available right away. Players can also improve Arjun’s combat suit and skills to make things easier. Finally, Housemarque announced that Saros will be a PlayStation 5 exclusive, launching on March 20, 2026.

Looking ahead to 2026, *Saros* is expected to be the first new game from a PlayStation studio. We’ll likely learn more about this adventure from Housemarque in the coming months, possibly with a dedicated presentation early next year. The first gameplay trailer suggested that *Saros* will focus more on its story and characters than Housemarque’s previous games, featuring a variety of characters and holographic recordings that reveal the history of the planet Carcosa.
