This year, two fan-favorite rhythm games from PSP will be available on the Nintendo Switch. These aren’t just any games; they are the initial two installments of the Patapon series. Remarkably, this makes it the fourth intellectual property from PlayStation to have been officially confirmed for a release on the Nintendo Switch.
First released in 2007, the game known as Patapon was created by Pyramid and the disbanded Japan Studio team, a subsidiary of Sony’s PlayStation. Within the PSP gaming community, Patapon garnered popularity due to its unique gameplay style that lets players command an army of small, one-eyed soldiers via drum beats. The success of this initial game spawned a highly acclaimed sequel in 2008 and a third installment in 2011. By 2020, Patapon and its sequel had been remastered for the PS4. To this day, this lesser-known series continues to be cherished as a PlayStation classic.
Supporters of the series have experienced a lively year thus far, as Patapon 3 was incorporated into the PlayStation Plus Premium classics library last month, allowing for the entire trilogy to be played on contemporary devices. Now, Patapon is set to appear on the Switch for the very first time, with the most recent Nintendo Direct confirming the release of Patapon 1+2 Replay. Although it’s a Sony-owned IP, development of this Patapon collection isn’t being managed by PlayStation; instead, Bandai Namco Entertainment is overseeing the project. Patapon 1+2 Replay is slated for release on Nintendo Switch, PS5, and PC on July 17, 2025, and will preserve the same cherished gameplay that initially propelled the series to fame.
Patapon 1+2 Replay Release Date and New Features
- July 17, 2025
- Coming to Nintendo Switch, PS5, and PC
New Features
- Difficulty settings: Easy, Normal, Hard
- Adjust timing of button press
- Keep drum icon displayed at all times
Furthermore, Bandai Namco has included some fresh accessibility options in the game Patapon 1+2 Replay. These include difficulty levels (Easy, Normal, Hard), customizing button press timing, and a permanent drum icon on screen. The pre-orders for Patapon 1+2 Replay are set to launch soon, although the cost hasn’t been revealed yet. It’s peculiar that Patapon 3 isn’t part of this remastered edition, but it’s possible Sony is evaluating how well the initial two games perform on Nintendo Switch before deciding whether to release the third installment as well, potentially independently. Noteworthy, Patapon 1+2 Replay wasn’t the sole classic PlayStation title to appear during the March 2025 Nintendo Direct.
In a fresh development for the “Everybody’s Golf” series, the latest installment titled “Everybody’s Golf: Hot Shots” is set to debut on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and PC later in the year. Interestingly, Bandai Namco’s Japanese publishing arm has also recently revamped the less-known PlayStation Vita exclusive game “Freedom Wars” from 2025. Earlier, Sony made a move by releasing “LEGO Horizon Adventures” on Nintendo Switch back in November 2020. These actions suggest that Sony is keen on expanding its intellectual properties to the Nintendo user base. It will be intriguing to observe the extent to which Sony pushes this multi-platform strategy.
