One of the best things about modern gaming is how easily accessible games are now, much more so than with older consoles like the NES, Sega Saturn, or PS2. However, gamers who grew up in the 80s, 90s, and early 2000s had the peace of mind of owning physical copies of their games, so they never worried about those games vanishing.
As a gamer, it really worries me that even if I buy a physical game these days, a lot of them still rely on online features that eventually get turned off. It got me thinking about which games might not be playable in the next few years, maybe by the time the next PlayStation comes out around 2030. Things like licensing deals – we saw what happened with Marvel Rivals – or even just music rights, like with Rocksmith+, can cause games to disappear digitally. Let’s look at some of the reasons why that could happen.
| Game Title | What Type Of Game Is It? | Why Could It Go Away? |
|---|---|---|
| 2XKO | 2D Fighter | The team downsized after one month. |
| The Finals | Multiplayer FPS | The player count is low in 2026. |
| Rocksmith+ | Music game | Licensed music goes away all the time. |
Marvel Rivals
On Top, For Now…
Most new team-based shooters with heroes similar to Overwatch fail when they launch. That makes Marvel Rivals really stand out. It had a successful launch and has continued to gain players since its release in 2024, thanks to consistent updates and new characters – Deadpool being one of the latest additions.
The game became incredibly popular, even getting a PlayStation 4 version in 2025. But because it’s based on Marvel characters, a big question is whether it can stay relevant until 2030. Licensed games often don’t last very long, and that’s where things could become difficult.
2XKO
Doomed After A Month
2XKO is a new fighting game created by Riot Games, the makers of League of Legends. It’s free to play and features unique, fast-paced 2D battles. Launched in January 2026, the game unfortunately required Riot to reduce its development team after just one month to ensure its long-term viability.
The game wasn’t performing well enough to maintain a full team after just one month, suggesting it might not survive for even a year, let alone reach its planned 2030 lifespan. It’s disappointing, because the characters, levels, and core fighting mechanics are all very well-made.
Silent Hill: The Short Message
The Way Of P.T.
In 2024, Konami released Silent Hill: The Short Message as a free teaser to build excitement for the return of the Silent Hill series. Later that year, the Silent Hill 2 remake came out and quickly overshadowed The Short Message. This was further compounded a year later with the release of Silent Hill f.
Silent Hill: The Short Message didn’t impress many fans, who found it to be a fairly standard first-person horror game with few action elements, though it did offer some effective scares and visuals. Given the lack of strong community support and Konami’s history of removing free Silent Hill content – like they did with P.T. – the game could be taken down at any time.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Splintered Fate
The Fate For Turtles Is Always Grim
Released in 2023, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Splintered Fate is an action-packed roguelike game played from a top-down perspective, drawing inspiration from the popular game Hades. While it might not be the greatest TMNT game ever created, it’s surprisingly good for a licensed title. Each turtle offers a different playstyle with unique weapons and abilities, and the campaign is enjoyable, even if it’s a bit easier than other games in the roguelike genre.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles games are often removed from digital stores when their licenses expire, but fans hope the game will still be available online in 2030. Luckily, there are still physical copies available if it isn’t.
Tetris Forever
Collecting The Best Puzzle Games
Released in 2024, Tetris Forever brings together a fantastic collection of classic Tetris games, like Tetris, Hatris, Tetris Battle Gaiden, and Tetris Time Warp, among others. The games are easy to learn and enjoy thanks to their simple gameplay and music, making them perfect for players of all skill levels.
Honestly, what really got me excited was hearing some versions even let you play with friends right next to you – either competing or teaming up! That’s a huge draw, beyond just how much I love Tetris itself. It’s good to know that even if these collections aren’t around forever because of licensing or what’s popular, at least you can still find a physical copy to own.
Mobile Suit Gundam: Battle Operation 2
Not The Best Gundam Game Around
Mobile Suit Gundam: Battle Operation 2 is a free-to-play action game based on the popular Gundam series. Originally released on PlayStation 4 in 2019 and PlayStation 5 in 2021, the game is getting older, and its initial reception wasn’t great, so it might not be available much longer – likely before 2030.
Lots of Gundam games are available for consoles, and currently, SD Gundam Battle Alliance and Gundam Breaker 4 are considered particularly good. Mobile Suit Gundam: Battle Operation 2 might be followed by a new game, or the series could simply end.
Hot Wheels: Rift Rally
Toys-To-Life Are Back?
Released for PlayStation 5 in 2023, Hot Wheels: Rift Rally is a free app that works with a physical toy car. Similar to Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit from 2020, it’s a ‘toys-to-life’ game where you buy a car, build a track in your home, and then use a camera to bring the experience to life with augmented reality.
Players have a lot of freedom to customize their experience, but creating these projects requires significant space and resources. If stores run out of room to display the physical products, the accompanying app will also become unavailable.
Rocksmith+
Ubisoft Could Go Down
In 2012, Ubisoft created the Rocksmith series as a competitor to popular music games like Guitar Hero and Rock Band. What set Rocksmith apart was its focus on teaching players how to actually play guitar through interactive lessons. The first game was updated in 2014, but it took until 2022 for a new version, Rocksmith+, to be released as a free service.
As a fan, I really loved that you could connect your own guitar or keyboard to the game and then buy the songs you wanted to learn – they’ve added so many songs over time! It worked really well and gave you good feedback as you played. But honestly, I always worried about the game sticking around long-term. Unlike games based on movies or superheroes, music licenses are tough. It’s just harder to keep all those songs available, and that always felt like a risk with this kind of game.
The Finals
Too Many Competitive Shooters
Released in 2023, The Finals is a fast-paced, competitive first-person shooter that quickly gained popularity. A PlayStation 4 version followed in 2024, and the game featured a balanced competitive scene across all platforms. However, by 2026, the player base had significantly decreased.
Adding new characters, maps, weapons, and other content could give the game a boost in popularity, but that boost might not last. As with games like Marvel Rivals, free-to-play shooters are in a crowded market, and players have a lot of options to choose from.
