PS5 Players Could Get Indiana Jones Before Some Game Pass Subscribers

Highlights

  • Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is set to release on December 9, 2024, for Xbox Series X/S and PC.
  • Xbox first-party games will release on the newly-created Game Pass Standard tier 6–12 months after their initial launch, as per Microsoft’s recent changes to the service.
  • Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is reportedly targeting an April 2025 launch for PS5, suggesting that users on the Sony platform could have access to the game before Game Pass Standard subscribers.

As a lifelong Xbox gamer with countless hours spent navigating the treacherous terrains of Halo and Forza, I must admit, this recent development leaves me feeling a bit like Indiana Jones himself – betrayed by the very treasure I’ve been chasing all these years.

Following the revelation that “Indiana Jones and the Great Circle” will be available on PlayStation 5, it’s been noted that Sony platform users might receive the Xbox-exclusive game prior to standard Game Pass subscribers. The adventure game, scheduled for a December 2024 launch on Xbox Series X/S and PC, is expected to arrive on PS5 in the spring of 2025.

The upcoming game, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, being an exclusive Xbox first-party production, will be accessible from day one on Game Pass Ultimate and PC platforms, but it won’t be included in the standard console package. To clarify, Microsoft has previously announced significant changes to Xbox Game Pass for both console and PC versions. Among these changes, the most notable is the exclusion of day one first-party games from the standard subscription on Xbox consoles. This decision was followed by a price increase and a rebranding to “Xbox Game Pass Standard.” Effective September 12, only subscribers of Game Pass Ultimate and Game Pass for PC will have access to new Xbox titles on day one.

As an eager fan, I’m excited to share that Microsoft has confirmed they will add first-party games to Xbox Game Pass gradually, on a case-by-case basis, which could take anywhere from 6 months to over a year. Given this timeline, it seems unlikely that Indiana Jones and the Great Circle will join Game Pass Standard before June 2025 at the earliest, as its release on Xbox Series X/S and PC is scheduled for December 9, 2024. On the other hand, the PS5 version of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is set to debut in spring 2025, and a recent report from The Verge suggests that Bethesda and MachineGames are aiming for an April 2025 release for the PlayStation port.

Indiana Jones Could Be on PS5 At Least Two Months Before Game Pass Standard

  • PS5: Spring 2025 (April rumored)
  • Game Pass Standard: June 2025–December 2025 (possibly longer)

If the report is accurate, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle might debut on PlayStation 5 about two months ahead of its Xbox Game Pass Standard release. This early launch could be the earliest possible for Xbox Game Pass if Microsoft follows their usual timeline. However, if Indiana Jones and the Great Circle performs well financially, Xbox Game Pass subscribers may not get to play it until December 2025 or later. This scenario could leave Microsoft’s own customers at a disadvantage in terms of access compared to users on a rival platform, making it somewhat risky.

It’s possible that Microsoft has anticipated this problem by accelerating the launch of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle on Game Pass ahead of its PS5 release in spring 2025, though this hasn’t been officially confirmed yet. Regardless, the situation doesn’t look great, and public opinion towards Game Pass has slipped a bit lately. Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two, recently hinted that releasing games on day one on Game Pass is an illogical move, a sentiment shared by many others following the July 2024 modifications to the subscription service.
