Okay, so I’m hearing some really exciting news about the PS5 Pro! It looks like Sony might finally be showing off the next big improvement to how the console boosts game resolution using AI. The PS5 Pro dropped late last year, and on paper, it’s the most powerful console out there. Honestly, though, it hasn’t been flying off the shelves as much as you’d think, especially with that $700 price tag, even though it is a big step up from the original PS5.
PlayStation followed up with a more powerful PS5 Pro, which cost $749.99. The initial improvements to the console centered around making it more energy-efficient and quieter. Recently, Mark Cerny, the lead architect behind the PS5, announced further upgrades planned for 2026. These will specifically boost the PS5 Pro’s ability to upscale images and deliver even better graphics.
PlayStation 5 Pro Rumored to Receive PSSR 2.0 Update
PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) 2.0, a potential upgrade to the PS5’s graphics technology, is reportedly launching between January and March of this year. The information comes from Twitter user Gust_FAN, who has a track record of accurately leaking PlayStation news, including details about the PS5 Slim and the upcoming PS5 Pro. Gust_FAN recently shared the potential release timeframe and some features of the PSSR 2.0 upgrade.
This new update aims to boost performance in games that were limited to 70-80 frames per second, improve the graphics in older PlayStation 4 games, and give game developers better tools for fixing issues. When referring to ‘classic games,’ it seems they mean games from the PS4 library, which already see some visual and performance improvements when played on the PS5 Pro. The update will also include a feature similar to AMD’s FSR4, which will make games look sharper and run smoother. The announcement didn’t say whether this update will affect the price of the PS5 Pro.
If the recent buzz is accurate, Sony will likely announce something official for PlayStation fans soon. Many PS5 owners are still debating whether the rumored PS5 Pro is a worthwhile upgrade. This new version could convince doubters, particularly if its PSSR 2.0 technology is as effective as AMD’s FSR4. This would close the performance gap between the PS5 Pro and current gaming PCs by improving upscaling technology.
The new PlayStation 5 Pro offers impressive visuals – players can choose between smooth gameplay at 4K resolution with 60 frames per second, or more realistic graphics with ray-tracing and quicker loading speeds. Despite these improvements, sales haven’t been as strong as the PS4 Pro’s were at launch. To boost sales, PlayStation may release the PS5 Pro alongside its upcoming exclusive game, Saros, which comes out in April. The game’s developer, Housemarque, has stated that Saros will utilize the PS5 Pro’s capabilities, though it’s currently unknown if it will include ray-tracing. While fans await confirmation of these details, they can still look forward to PlayStation’s exciting lineup of exclusive games, including Saros and Wolverine, planned for release in 2026.
