A resourceful gamer successfully ran the popular adventure game, “No Man’s Sky,” on a portable PlayStation Vita system using the PS5 Remote Play feature. Though Hello Games has launched “No Man’s Sky” on multiple platforms, it was never available for the PlayStation Vita.
In the sprawling cosmic community known as No Man’s Sky, players embark on adventures filled with exploration, base construction, combat against foes, and cooperation, all while satisfying their innate desire to wander in a game that, due to its procedural generation, feels almost infinitely vast. Originally marketed as an exclusive for PC and PlayStation 4 upon its release in 2016, No Man’s Sky has since expanded to various gaming platforms, such as the PS5, Xbox Series, and even the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. This expansion allows millions of players on most current consoles and PCs to experience what is widely considered one of the largest open-world games ever created.
Recently, a user named djscull on Reddit demonstrated playing the game ‘No Man’s Sky’ on the PlayStation Vita, a console no longer in production as it ceased manufacturing in 2019, over three years after ‘No Man’s Sky’ was initially released. This was achieved using the PlayStation 5’s Remote Play feature, an online streaming service that allows players to run PS5 games on a secondary device. Interestingly, the PS5 Remote Play doesn’t officially support the PS Vita because the Vita had already been discontinued before the PS5 was even launched.
Player Streams PS5 Remote Play Games to Vita Using Custom Firmware
In simpler terms, user djscull shared that they can play “No Man’s Sky” on their Vita device anywhere around the house without needing a PlayStation Portal streaming device or a handheld console like the Nintendo Switch. The gaming community on Reddit praised djscull for making the most of old hardware since it’s no longer officially supported by Sony. Many shared fond memories of their own Vitas, reminiscing about playing “Destiny” raids via PS4 Remote Play. Some players questioned why the PS5 doesn’t support Vita in its Remote Play feature, considering how it could have filled the role currently played by the PS Portal while still being a unique platform.

When inquired about this matter, djscull explained that although the PS5 doesn’t officially permit Remote Play streaming to a PS Vita, modifying (or “jailbreaking”) the Vita to use unauthorized software makes it capable of receiving streams from the PS5. This operation is analogous to other modifications that make it possible to stream PS5 games on devices like the Steam Deck or other handheld PCs. On a different note, the PS Vita is able to engage in Remote Play with PS4 systems, enabling PS4 owners to broadcast games such as “No Man’s Sky” to their Vitas without any necessary adjustments.
