Summary
- Sony has seemingly begun removing low-effort spam games from the PlayStation Store.
- Developers and players have complained that the Store is filled with titles that use generative AI and have little to no content.
- RandomSpinGames released 19 titles in 2024 alone, but has now had most of them removed from the PlayStation Store.
Following numerous complaints from game creators and PlayStation 5 users, it appears that Sony is taking steps to remove some of the spam games with minimal effort and content from the PlayStation Store. These games are frequently produced at a higher rate than others, leading to an overabundance of low-quality titles on the store, which negatively impacts both developers and gamers.
With AI usage in gaming becoming increasingly concerning, game studios are increasingly resorting to AI for facilitating the creation of larger triple-A titles, such as Treyarch Studios, who have been accused of employing AI tools to design loading screens for Call of Duty: Black Ops 6. While this might seem like a minor aspect, it stirred dissatisfaction among fans. However, there are unscrupulous individuals leveraging AI to speedily produce low-quality games and distribute them on platforms like Steam, Nintendo eShop, PlayStation Store, and others. IGN recently interviewed reputable developers voicing their discontent with this trend, and it appears that Sony might be taking notice.
Sony Removes PS5 Spam Games From the PlayStation Store
The problem for gamers is finding top-notch PS5 games amidst the influx of low-effort titles. However, it seems that this situation might improve soon. Based on reports from keen observers at PSNProfiles (via TrueTrophies), Sony has removed almost all of RandomSpinGames’ offerings from the PlayStation Store. This developer was infamous for adding to the low-quality games available on the platform, with titles like “Bodycam Shooter,” “Backrooms Brotherhood,” and “Supermarket Simulator Pro.” In 2024 alone, RandomSpinGames released a whopping 19 titles – a feat that’s typically beyond the reach of most indie developers or triple-A studios focusing on creating high-quality games.
Unfortunately, a large number of what are known as “spam” games continue to populate the PlayStation Store. However, with Sony taking steps to clean up their platform, there’s optimism that these problematic titles will gradually disappear over time. It’s important to note that this isn’t exclusive to PlayStation; even Nintendo has encountered similar issues on their Nintendo eShop. In a conversation with IGN, an anonymous developer revealed that it’s relatively easy for scammers to infiltrate Nintendo’s system, allowing them to create titles like “Fart Fart Boobie Fart: The Game” and others of questionable quality. These games might initially slip through the cracks, but they are eventually removed from the platform.
Low-effort games are causing issues for players discovering new titles and hindering independent developers from thriving. However, PlayStation users can still unearth exceptional indie games within the Store by perusing the PlayStation Indies section. Titles like Gang Beasts, Cult of The Lamb, Sifu, Hollow Knight, among others, are featured here. Additionally, the PlayStation Store is hosting a massive sale in February 2025, featuring both triple-A and indie games, which will continue until the 19th of that month.
