PSA: Don't Bring a Gun to a Fistfight in Indiana Jones and the Great Circle

As a seasoned gamer who has traversed through countless virtual worlds and battled mythical creatures with legendary heroes, I must admit that Indiana Jones and the Great Circle has piqued my interest like none other. The prospect of stepping into the shoes of the iconic archaeologist himself, navigating treacherous terrains, and engaging in combat reminiscent of the films, is exhilarating.

As a die-hard Indiana Jones fan, I can’t help but feel the weight of expectation for Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. With the beloved Indy movies having carved out a lasting legacy over the past four decades, it’s crucial that this game stays true to its roots. Fortunately, the developers at MachineGames seem to have taken this responsibility seriously, meticulously designing every aspect of the game to echo the essence of the film series, particularly the combat system.

At Gamescom 2024, our team from Game Rant had an engaging conversation with Axel Torvanius (creative director) and Jens Andersson (design director) of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. In this discussion, Andersson unveiled some details about the game’s combat system and how it maintains fidelity to the films by minimizing gun usage.

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle Discourages the Use of a Gun

In essence, Indiana Jones isn’t primarily focused on fights but on mystery and exploration. However, as the films do contain a fair share of combat, it had to be incorporated into the gameplay of “Indiana Jones and the Great Circle.” The challenge lies in finding a method of integration that stays true to the movies, which means reducing gunfights and increasing hand-to-hand combats. When asked about the overall strategy behind “Indiana Jones and the Great Circle’s” combat design, Andersson stated:

“The essence of our game lies in creating an authentic Indiana Jones experience. This involves providing you with the same tools as Indiana Jones, such as his revolver. However, while you can draw your weapon and simulate shooting someone, this action doesn’t occur in the movie. We don’t intend to encourage or reward such actions.”

As an avid fan, I can’t wait to delve into the arsenal of tools at my disposal in Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. While the explorer’s revolver is a trusty companion, it’s clear that Indiana Jones’ iconic whip takes center stage. MachineGames has masterfully crafted this tool, making it not only essential for traversing challenging terrains but also potent enough in combat to encourage players to favor it over their firearms. In an intriguing conversation about the whip, Andersson shared:

As a fan, I’d like to emphasize that the whip in your arsenal is meant for frequent usage. It serves not only as a means of navigation but also as a tactical tool. You can employ it to disarm opponents or even initiate combat by drawing someone closer for a melee engagement, allowing you to begin a series of punches.

MachineGames has put in a lot of effort to keep Indiana Jones and the Great Circle consistent with the films, particularly in its fight scenes. Consequently, the game’s combat follows the same build-up as seen in an Indiana Jones movie—from tranquil to tumultuous. However, MachineGames advises players to strive for peace rather than chaos, suggesting a stealthy strategy over a shoot-first approach. As Andersson noted for the game’s combat style,

“In our game, there’s a progression of events in combat. Initially, you can choose to move stealthily or not, sometimes using disguise. If things don’t go as planned, it may lead to close-quarters fighting. In worst-case scenarios where enemies start shooting, you can retaliate, but remember that this is a risky decision. It’s only when all else fails. However, our aim is to maintain a balance so that the game doesn’t instantly resort to gunfights. Even though we offer the option to shoot, it’s not the best strategy and might not be the most enjoyable part of the game.”

Turning the core elements of the Indiana Jones films into a video game is no simple task, but MachineGames appears to have gone above and beyond to preserve the ambiance of the Indiana Jones series in Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. As a result, when players get to don Indy’s hat come December, they might want to practice their quick reflexes, as they’ll be reaching for the whip instead of a gun.
