Now that Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen are available on Nintendo Switch, a new audience can experience these beloved games over two decades after they first came out. Whether you’re a first-time player or a returning fan, it’s good to know these remakes have a few unique issues that can impact your game. Specifically, a post-game encounter with a Legendary Pokemon can go wrong due to a glitch if you’re not careful.
While Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen are updated versions of the first Pokemon games, they’re considered part of the third generation, allowing them to feature more than just the original 151 Pokemon. Specifically, after you beat the main story, you can find several Pokemon from the second generation in the Sevii Islands – an area unique to FireRed and LeafGreen. This includes the Legendary Beast trio – Suicune, Raikou, and Entei – though it’s surprisingly easy to miss catching two of them.
Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen Have a Post-Game Legendary Encounter That’s Easy to Fail
Image via The Pokemon Company You can visit the first three Sevii Islands before becoming the Pokémon Champion, but the last four become available only after you defeat the Elite Four, catch at least 60 Pokémon, and receive the National Pokédex from Professor Oak. This unlocks a new quest where you help Celio upgrade his machine by finding the Ruby and Sapphire. Completing this quest and defeating Team Rocket on the islands will then allow you to battle the final Legendary Pokémon, like Mewtwo and the Legendary Beasts.

How to Get the Legendary Suicune, Raikou, and Entei in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen
Once you’ve fully upgraded Celio’s Network Machine and dealt with Team Rocket in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen, you can start trying to catch Suicune, Raikou, and Entei. But keep in mind, only one of these Legendary Beasts will appear in each game. Which one you’ll encounter depends on which starter Pokemon you chose at the beginning of the game.
- Bulbasaur — Entei
- Charmander — Suicune
- Squirtle — Raikou
You’ll find these Legendary Pokémon by randomly encountering them while exploring different routes in the Kanto region. Catching them won’t be easy, though! They’ll try to run away immediately, forcing you to start the search over. You can prevent this by having a Pokémon with the Arena Trap ability in the lead, or by using the move Mean Look.
To make hunting for Legendaries easier, use Repels with a Pokémon under level 50 in the lead. This will reduce encounters with unwanted wild Pokémon while still allowing the Legendary to appear.
What Makes these Roaming Legendaries So Easy to Fail
Image via Game Freak, Nintendo, The Pokemon Company Players who started with Bulbasaur or Squirtle might have trouble catching Entei or Raikou in FireRed and LeafGreen. A glitch can cause these Pokémon to disappear forever if they use the move Roar during battle. Because only Entei and Raikou know Roar, players who chose Charmander and are hunting Suicune aren’t affected. To avoid losing the Legendary Pokémon due to this glitch, it’s best to save your Master Ball for the encounter to ensure a successful catch.
