Summary
- PS Placeable mod turns PSPs into console.
- Allows Bluetooth controllers, connects to TV.
- Maintains UMD drive access, giving second life to old games.
As a lifelong gamer with a soft spot for handheld consoles, I must say that the PS Placeable mod has caught my attention like no other! Growing up, the PSP was my constant companion during long commutes and sleepovers at friends’ houses. So, the thought of being able to play those classic games on a big screen is just too enticing to ignore.
A talented gamer has created a mod that converts PSP handhelds into a home system. The modification is impressive, giving PSP players the opportunity to use any Bluetooth controller with the system and easily connect it to a TV or other screen.
Sony introduced the PlayStation Portable (PSP) into the handheld gaming market as a competitor against companies like Nintendo. The PSP had multiple versions and achieved some level of success, but its successor, the PS Vita, didn’t fare as well and was eventually discontinued following the release of the Nintendo Switch. However, there are many dedicated PSP fans who continue to cherish their devices, and for them, this modification could be worth considering.
Retro Mod Works unveiled an innovative method for transforming a PlayStation Portable (PSP) into a console-like device, which they’ve named the PS Placeable. This modification places the PSP within a miniature replica of a PlayStation 2 (PS2), enabling easy connection to a TV. Remarkably, even damaged PSPs with broken screens can be repurposed through this method, extending their usefulness and preventing them from being discarded. The setup also offers users the convenience of using a Bluetooth controller instead of the physical PSP as a controller when connected to a television, enhancing the overall gaming experience.
PS Placeable Makes UMDs Viable
Retro Mod Works was founded primarily because the creator wasn’t fond of digital games and often felt compelled to buy multiple copies of a single game. Over time, many PlayStation Portable (PSP) games have migrated to other platforms, but the proprietary UMD format is incompatible with modern systems. However, the PS Placeable retains access to the UMD drive, allowing users to insert any game they own and replay it as if it were a brand new experience.
Retro Mod Works provides two options for acquiring a PS Placeable: a DIY kit containing all necessary components, or a ready-to-use version that comes with a built-in PSP. Given its popularity, the pre-assembled model has run out of stock, and only the DIY kits are now available due to high demand. The pricing for the DIY kits ranges from $39.99 to $69.99 based on the components required, whereas the pre-built version is priced at $274.99. Given that the original PSP was sold at $249, this seems like a reasonable offer for enthusiasts of the platform. For those who already own a PSP and prefer not to build it themselves, the modder offers an installation service for integrating customers’ PSPs into the device.
Although the PlayStation Portable is no longer available, there’s talk of a brand new PlayStation handheld being developed. Let’s hope it becomes a reality! In the meantime, enthusiasts may find this modification for the old PSP quite appealing.
