PUBG Creator Metaverse

As a dedicated follower of gaming history and a die-hard fan of Brendan Greene’s groundbreaking work, I can hardly contain my excitement about his latest endeavor. This man isn’t just another game developer; he’s the visionary who turned a simple mod into an industry-defining phenomenon with PUBG. Now, he’s aiming for the stars (or rather, the metaverse) with Project Artemis.

The sheer audacity of creating a unified 3D internet is mind-boggling. But then again, who would have thought that a battle royale game would dominate the online shooter landscape just a few years ago? Greene’s vision for a metaverse that allows users to create their own worlds and interact with them seamlessly sounds like a dream come true for gamers everywhere.

What makes this even more impressive is that he’s aware of the challenges ahead, setting a tentative 2040 target to allow supporting technology to mature. It’s a long wait, but as someone who has witnessed Greene’s remarkable journey so far, I have no doubt he’ll make it happen.

Before we reach Project Artemis, we have two exciting games on the horizon: Preface: Undiscovered World and Prologue: Go Wayback. The former is already available in early access, while the latter is currently in closed testing. These games will help clear the path for Artemis by field-testing the Melba terrain generation system, which has the potential to generate realistic terrain on the fly. If the world in Artemis looks anywhere close to what we’ve seen from Melba at The Game Awards, it’ll already leave Meta’s universe in the dust.

I can’t help but chuckle at the thought of Mark Zuckerberg’s face when he sees what Greene has up his sleeve. I guess the joke’s on you, Meta! Brendan Greene is not just making another game; he’s redefining the future of gaming, and I can’t wait to be a part of it.

People are generally familiar with the concept of New Year’s resolutions, which often involve setting broad, feasible objectives that aren’t always carefully planned out in terms of achieving them.

Brendan Greene isn’t an ordinary individual. In fact, when he previously undertook creating a modification, it evolved into a full-fledged game that significantly reshaped the online shooter genre.

In the gaming world today, Fortnite is undeniably the top battle royale game, but its triumph can be attributed to the pioneer title, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG).

Today, Greene shared during an interview with IGN that his upcoming venture is centered around building a metaverse.

The creator of PUBG understands that what they’re embarking on isn’t a simple task, and has tentatively set a goal for completion in the year 2040, taking into account the hurdles that may arise along the way.

It appears that the concept of ‘metaverse’, due to Facebook (now Meta)’s less successful attempt, which is estimated to have set back its corporate parents by a staggering $46 billion from 2021 to 2024 as per NASDAQ’s reports, has been somewhat overshadowed.

In Greene’s view, it isn’t the metaverse we know, but rather interconnected islands of intellectual property (IP), capable of communicating with one another. His conceptualization is that of a three-dimensional version of the internet, unified by a common protocol, and it goes by the name Artemis.

In simpler terms, you can think of creating multiple unique universes or realms, all running on the same set of rules or language, similar to how different web pages function under the HTTP protocol. In essence, I’m working on a project called Artemis that aims to achieve this interconnectedness between these imaginary worlds.

A significant factor contributing to the projected 15-year timeline for this grand undertaking is to ensure that the necessary underlying technology has enough time to develop and become fully-fledged, making it ready for integration within a metaverse.

What Is Coming Before Project Artemis?

As of today, PlayerUnknown Productions is working on two games to help clear the path for Artemis.

The game titled “Undiscovered World” can currently be found on Steam under early access status, serving as a technical demonstration for the upcoming second installment in the series.

Prologue: Go Wayback is currently in closed testing and should come out sometime this year.

Rather than adopting a complex gameplay style prone to failure, this game opts for a straightforward survival mechanism. The objective is to travel from one location (point A) to another (point B), all the while enduring the harsh environments.

As a devoted fan, I embark on the thrilling journey of Prologue, not just for pure entertainment, but to put the Melba terrain generation system crafted by the brilliant minds at PlayerUnknown Productions through its paces.

Due to NASA’s extensive geographical data, Melba has the ability to create authentic landscapes dynamically, leading to an almost endless array of map variations in a survival game.

As a passionate admirer, if the realm depicted in Artemis even slightly resembles the breathtaking display from Melba’s segment at The Game Awards, it would hands down outshine Meta’s current cosmos with a significant margin.
