As a seasoned gamer with over two decades under my belt, I can’t help but feel a sense of excitement and anticipation at the news from Brendan ‘PlayerUnknown’ Greene’s PLAYERUNKNOWN Productions. The man who is often referred to as the father of the modern battle royale genre is back, and he’s got something truly monumental up his sleeve – an Earth-sized MMO called Project Artemis.
Brendan ‘PlayerUnknown’ Greene’s PLAYERUNKNOWN Productions has revealed a three-game plan that’s being kickstarted with an open-world survival game – ‘Prologue: Go Wayback!’
Today, Greene’s team unveiled some exciting news, complete with a six-minute sneak peek into the future of these projects. Back in 2021, PLAYERUNKNOWN Productions was established in Amsterdam with the goal of bringing to life an impressive, vast multiplayer universe known as Project Artemis.
‘The Father of Battle Royale’
Often regarded as the pioneer of the contemporary battle royale genre, Brendan Greene is credited with the invention of PUBG (PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds), which debuted in 2017 and sparked the creation of similar games such as Fortnite, Free Fire, Apex Legends, and Call of Duty: Warzone.
Brendan Greene is PlayerUnknown – it’s his Battleground that you’re occupying when you play PUBG.
PlayerUnknown Productions is currently developing a massive multiplayer online (MMO) titled Project Artemis, modeled after Earth, but before that becomes available, they’re focusing on creating a standalone, open-world survival game. The single-player game has now been given the title “Prologue: Time Travel Back!
From 2021 onwards, Greene’s projects have been largely secretive, with occasional fireside chats being the main platform for players to receive updates about PLAYERUNKNOWN Productions. An article from PC Gamer, published in September, unveiled that the team had developed an entire planet which employs sophisticated rendering technology to load massive tracts of land almost instantly.
According to the press statement, this technology enables an immediate generation of countless maps numbering into the millions.
In the same release, Greene explained:
For Artemis, I envision a journey that may be demanding, yet we’re determined to make progress gradually, breaking it down into manageable stages. The three games we’ve planned serve as our strong technological base, enabling us to grow and expand upon it in the future.
Following the initial launch, there are two additional games scheduled for release in the near future. These games will tackle significant technical hurdles, helping us get closer to our final product. With the Prologue, we strive to captivate players and familiarize them with the emerging mechanics and vast worlds we’re creating.
The article disclosed that Greene aims to establish a realm capable of hosting multiple thousands of simultaneous players, with an ultimate aspiration to cater to millions. This is undeniably a monumental endeavor, yet the foundation is already being established.
Additionally, as part of the unveiling of their three-part strategy, it was also shared that fans would have access to a complimentary technical demonstration titled “Preface: Uncharted Realm.” This demo has been crafted utilizing the game engine developed by PUBG Studios, known as Melba.
Here’s a more conversational way of expressing it: “You can check out this technology demonstration right now on Steam. As for ‘Prologue: Go Wayback!’, we expect it to be released in an early access format for PC in the second quarter of 2025.
