Raiders of Blackveil: The Epic Fusion of RPG, Extraction, and MOBA Madness

As a passionate gaming enthusiast, I must say that genre mashups can be daring endeavors. When they don’t align seamlessly, the experience can feel disjointed and confusing. However, when done right, these mixes can result in a game that encapsulates the best aspects of various game styles. Remarkably, it seems that Wombo Games has struck the perfect balance with their debut title, Raiders of Blackveil.

In a conversation with Game Rant, game director Christopher Nelson discussed how the game Raiders of Blackveil combines role-playing game (RPG) loot mechanics, extraction-style gameplay, and multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA)-inspired heroes within a roguelike framework. This unique blend is intended to create an immersive and thrilling experience that the studio believes will captivate players.

How Things Come Together in Raiders of Blackveil

At first glance, the game Raiders of Blackveil seems to encompass numerous genres and intricate components, giving an impression that it’s attempting to accomplish multiple tasks simultaneously. However, Nelson clarified that instead of spreading itself thin in four directions, the game adopts a deliberate strategy when selecting and blending elements from diverse playstyles.

At its heart, this game shares key characteristics with roguelikes, meaning its structure closely resembles that genre. In essence, you only get one life, and your goal is to journey as far as possible across multiple environments, known as biomes, before meeting your demise. Each time you perish, you’re forced to restart the game from the beginning.

Your personal hideout serves as a storage area for all items, loot, trinkets, resources, and even the currency earned during raids, which occupy slots in your inventory. Throughout your journey, you must make strategic decisions about what to keep on your current run and what to return to your base. This constant evaluation is crucial to your progression and success in the game.

In this game, the main gameplay combines the looting aspect from RPGs with the basic features of roguelikes. Additionally, players can pick from several champions, each reminiscent of MOBA characters, who possess unique abilities and passives. Currently, Raiders of Blackveil offers four playable champions: a rhino-human tank, a bee-woman druid, a chameleon-man assassin, and a cheetah-woman fire mage. Four more champions, including the monk, warlock, guardian, and priest, are in development.

The aim of Nelson and the Wombo team was to merge animals with fantasy characters to create their heroes. Initially, the four champions make up a harmonious team during cooperative gameplay, but Raiders of Blackveil is also designed to be playable solo or in a group. This aspect presented a challenge for the team, as they wanted to ensure singleplayer functionality was included. Notably, designing the self-sufficient bumblebee healer for solo play proved to be a conundrum that Nelson had to find a solution for.

A significant aspect of Raiders of Blackveil tackles the challenge by featuring a varied skill system. For example, the chameleon and cheetah characters possess abilities that boost their survivability during single-player missions. Moreover, Nelson emphasized interconnectedness among the game’s perks, which amplify the unique status effects associated with each class and expand triggers for those effects. For instance, when skillfully combined, the cheetah can ignite the entire battlefield.

The Goal of Raiders of Blackveil’s Champions

Every great hero requires a motivation, and for the Raiders of Blackveil, that driving force is their anthropomorphic characters who are engaged in a battle against a ruthless industrial corporation named Blackveil. This theme shares some common elements with the classic style of Sonic the Hedgehog, notably the Saturday morning cartoon inspired by the comic book series from Archie Comics. However, Raiders of Blackveil is distinctly unique in its narrative.

On board the airship Liberator, which serves as the resistance’s stronghold, players will engage with their fellow rebels, uncover hidden abilities in the process of overthrowing the forces of Blackveil. Missions involve players embarking on thrilling raids to seize resources and sabotage Blackveil, as these anthropomorphic characters strive to cripple the corporation.

As a gamer exploring the Steam Next Fest, I’m excited to delve into one of Blackveil’s production sites – the infamous Meat Factory. This is where they churn out substandard food for the world of Wildguard, mass-produced in an unethical and immoral manner. It’s a grim, dirty place, but it hums with an intense focus on production. You’ll find conveyor belts everywhere, towering machinery, and hordes of Blackveil employees ready to challenge you. Robots too, they’re part of the package. Brace yourself for a gritty battle in this industrial hellhole!

Individuals who are eager about the saga of Raiders of Blackveil can look forward to uncovering more details about Wildguard’s fight for freedom from Blackveil corporation during Steam Next Fest in June, as the airship Liberator makes its way towards Early Access.
